Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
Cut the existing shaft, remove the existing rudder and transom mount a tiller controller one or convert existing one to tiller? Both seem like a lot for a likely budget starter boat.
Like this one for the $ also.

Need this storm to pass so I can quit looking at boats and get back to work!

Usually not that big of a deal . Just need to get rid of the seat and wheel and place a gooseneck on the shaft top

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Noteworthy Finds
I like the idea of buying the older high quality boat and doing some renovation. One of the most common problems are very old auxiliary engines like Atomic fours. I used them 50 years ago! The insurance man doesn’t like gas inboard boat where people often cook. Is it easier to install a sail drive unit or replace the existing inboard drive system with diesel?
Most everyone says outboard on a bracket are no good…..

Absolutely nothing wrong with a good well maintained atomic 4 gas engine considering most small boats are gasoline powered . Get a new insurance agent.

The face of the electrical panel seems far more corroded than I'd expect. Perhaps the boat has been habitually closed up when wet?
There's a pretty ugly crack on the aft end of the starboard support for the main sheet traveller. It's hard to know if this is a major problem, but that area is subject to a lot of stress in a gybe.
Centreboard needs to be checked out carefully - judging by the state of the rest of the boat, maintenance may be lacking. Exterior teak is pretty bad.
I think the mast is deck stepped. I like the opening ports, but the forward hatch needs a new lens.
Port side fairlead missing on bow. Instruments need replacing. Engine panel needs replacement, and the engine hour meter is lying! That's probably the original engine.
Considering the age, the size, the condition, and the gear, I'd say it is overpriced.

Not a comment on this one example, but IPs are a cult boat like Cape Dories and Flickas, thus hold their resale value well.
IMO a good thing, unless planning to keep her until she sinks.

I agree. If you were going to bring something back from the dead, this model would be a candidate.
It's not an investment, except in the satisfaction of doing

Although its interior is smaller than a modern 40' it has some decent gear, diesel with very low engine hours. I'm not sure what it's been doing since it was repowered in 2004; not much cruising, if 180 is genuine.
No mention about the state of the sails, no dodger or bimini. Old CQR anchor and no windlass. (These are things I would check/change if I were to take this for an extensive cruise).
