There's a picture in that sequence of an engine painted green that is clearly not in this boat!

Deck drainage; there are lots of scuppers. Are there any cockpit drains? The bottom of the cockpit appears to be a hatch to get into the engine compartment; so if the cockpit fills with water, it needs to be watertight.

I quite agree. If you look at the steering position in OutOfControl's link the helmsman appears to be standing at deck level, so he can see over the dink.

The dinghy can be moved to the foredeck when going sea and towed at other times. We have an 8-foot hard dinghy on a 32 foot boat and we always tow it, but we're just coastal cruisers. It's also fairly heavy.

I'd say it would be a pain to hand steer this boat for prolonged periods anyway, mind you, I'm old and like some comfort

Absolutely ... if your goal is the restoration of an historically interesting boat, and you have plenty of time and $. I love the little sailing dinghy that comes with it.
There was a leeboard ketch that used to show up in my craigslist search in the upper Chesapeake Bay area.

Years ago I chartered one quite a few times for the trips I did with scouts around the local islands. I thought it was a fine boat to sail, it performs well. When things got rougher it felt pretty light on its feet, but that's just my sensibilities. It was certainly faster than the Downeast 38 I used to charter though. What do you want to do with her? I always thought Catalinas needed a bit of beefing up in the rig before crossing oceans. After all this time I'd want to know about the keel bolts. How is the engine?

Nice boats. They were well-built originally, I think, this size was popular and relatively expensive - which sometimes means they have been looked after, and there may not be many in our price range. Built in the US, the company is still in production, so that says something.

Conventional boats perhaps, but there's a reason for that in that they are a good compromise for most people who can afford them. A good cruising boat certainly.

We visited a couple who owned one of these. Bright, open interior, big cockpit, very liveable. They said it sailed well, and they could certainly back up the boat nicely when docking in a cross wind (to our envy!)

The boat has its shrouds attached on the inside of the side decks, iirc, and there were stainless rods inside taking the forces to the hull. This made walking forward on deck more comfortable than dodging the rigging on our boat.

If you're considering a boat older than 35 years, it should have been repowered (although perhaps not if it's a freshwater boat, as long as it's diesel).

Condition of sails, engine, exterior canvas and interior is important.

If you post a link we could say more about a specific boat.

Intend to use it for coastal cruising and island hopping. Also, I am brand new to sailing but intend to take courses (and figure it out on my own with my husbands help who has some experience). Any other suggestions on what may be good boats to start looking at are welcome as well.
