I didn't know about the medical condition. I've watched a few of his vids and enjoyed them. I've seen a few more of the Wind Hippie ones.

Perhaps a little wind from abeam is just what your ass needs to reach your dream son.
There was also the cray cray young couple Chris and Jess Bray from Australia who bought a 29ft piece of Junk (an awesome traveling machine) and proceeded to complete the North West Passage from East to West.
As we speak I am converting my C-Mist into a Junk Rig sloop.
Yes she is 32ft but I am 6'1" and at 60 I am terrified of lumbago in my dotage so my no longer quite so supple fat rancher ass needs the headroom otherwise I would be happy to hit the high seas in my 25ft Rebell Seaskip Mkll.
Go small. Go affordable. GO NOW.

Love your post , that adventure through the NWP looks amazing , the advantages of a small yacht when you are single handed are many
Have you read about blondie hazzler and the jester challenge , Colonel hazzler started a yacht race that was taken over by those with money ( OSTAR) ,so he started a second one called the jester challenge ( after his small 22ft vessel ) ,it was junk rigged ,the rules are ,no vessel over 30ft and it's up to you the skipper to decide if it's seaworthy
1st year is a qualifying run to the Azores and back ,second year is to cross the Atlantic , many real and great sailors have done the trip

Yes.
I am an active member of the Junk Rig Association and count many well known junkies as friends.
Blondie Hasler is also widely credited as the inventor of wind vane self steering with the introduction of his trim tab Hasler Wind Vane.

This.
There is no perfect boat. Just like people. All of them are compromises
I have seen so many people run out of life or health before they get the perfect boat to follow their dream. Boat builders are many, boat finishers are few.
There are also people who put off retiring to sea, paying to leave a boat rotting in a boatyard as a kind of placeholder for that dream.
If you're a single person, get a smaller boat to start with. You can always trade up...

1956 Steel 37' Moerman Zeeland Yawl $17,000, in New York.
https://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/92425
We saw this on its way from Georgian Bay to New York (the long way around). It was hauled out for sand blasting at Iroquois.
Very interesting boat in a workmanlike way. Interesting owner too. We hear he recently put in a Yanmar diesel.

And not too many electronics means you can update them as you desire.

It may have been a "new" used engine that was installed 2 years ago.
If you're in Virginia or nearby, there are a lot of boats to look at from Annapolis to Deltaville...
