There are lots of them around for a reasonable price. Definitely not a blue water boat, but passable as a coastal cruiser and maybe for venturing to the Caribbean.
I really considered purchasing one a number of years ago. I spent a lot of time onboard but in the end I just didn't like the aesthetics of it.

I bought one from Hank McCune himself in 1987. It had been abandoned in the Barstow desert for some unscrupulous reason. The boat had been used as a place for illegals coming over the border on their way up to Southern Ca. I say this as I found a few letters in the boat from their family, south.
I paid little for it and it came with a dead animal inside of it and filled with rain water. 2 1/2 years later I had it in the water and ended up living on it for 4 years and later sold it. A few new owners later was a guy who took it across the Pacific to Japan and back up through Alaska.

Personally, I wouldn't have done that in that boat. Chainplates were U-bolts, interior put together with steel finishing nails and a feeble bolt on keel with a fiberglass cover.

I have a good friend who could fix any diesel engine ,especially Perkins engines , he was head Hunted out to Florida ,he was one very good mechanic ,he was trained by Perkins here in the UK , he was doing real good out there , then a mosquito but him and he contracted West Nile disease ,he came back to the UK as his medical insurance ran out ,

He does not do much these days ,he's not a healthy man

Maybe one of you guys could post the link to a 2000 Bruce Roberts 495 voyage r on yachtworld ,it's up for 28,000 dollars ,it's a UK boat ,I can't work out how to do it with my Amazon fire

That boat is scrap. The welds did not penetrate the steel joints properly and left holes in the hull. The engine has been underwater. Most of the deck to hull joints have rusted through. That boat won't see the water.

I'm sorry...I've built 3 steel boats. 2 of my own and helped a friend with his Roberts 44. To me these look like very good welds and I cannot see any holes whatsoever. The engine might have been rained on but it would be near impossible to tell from pictures if the engine did get flooded.

The welds do not penetrate good enough. They barely penetrate the surface. They do look nice. If they bought a kit or had a local company cut the steel and stick to Roberts specs, that steel should be 1/4 inch (6.35mm). The welds should be flatter. When I took my welding course to complete my degree in Industrial Maintenance and Mechanics I had problems with poor penetration, until my instructor explained to me that my welds should barely be above the surface not standing proud. Even though both sides are welded, you can see seepage marks around the outside of the welds around the boat where water has gotten in and leaked back out. This is noticeable in the bow area in the pics. It's clearly a sign of pin holes allowing water to flow between the steel plates due to poor penetration. It's like a little tunnel between the plates. This is what can cause rust along weld lines on/in steel boats. You have probably seen it before. I've seen it a lot in quick build barge hulls. If you've never experienced this on your boats you've built, then you are a more competent welder than the person that welded that boat together.



Moving on.
