I guess it's a 46'? Something doesn't add up. Sailboatdata.com has a 38' and a 47'

Thoughts?
Welcome aboard javialquim! It looks to be the 47, I'd guess someone didn't measure right. What got my attention is that they have it down as a steel hull, and it is way too cheap.

Thanks - I've been lurking around here for a few years. This forum has helped me tons with my boats. I've just never posted before.

I called and left the broker a couple of messages. I'll report back on what I hear. Seems to good to be true - if it is true though, I'll drive the 8 hours I need to get there for in person inspection and purchase!

We'll see.

It does look like a round bilge steel or aluminium hull though, by the look of creases in the topsides?

Look like a lot of white paint hiding some misery.
I just went saw this in person.

The photographer was very good.

In my opinion it in no way reflects conditions of the boat I saw.

I was ready to write a check when I went down there, I left heartbroken.

I like these boats. Well-built. In general, if they have been looked after, they are a good buy.

Pro: Some good gear, diesel, allegedly good ground tackle, Wallas cooktop/heater, good sized cockpit, composting toilet.

Con: no bimini or awnings (mind you, this is the Pacific NW), centreboard would need close inspection, and those "reconditioned" interior cushions would be hard for me to live with...!

Tiller steering? Yawl? Some people might argue about the merits of those features.
There's another one on the East Coast USA, on Craigslist I think I also saw it on sailboatlistings.com a few weeks ago. For $16k usd!

Also, someone recently was looking for a 'Seaforth 24' and there is one listed at jerseyshore craigslist today in Barnegat Bay NJ for only $900k usd!! Sail away condition! Another boat for a younger person with limited funds.

It's a steel boat, presumably amateur builder? So the exact length may have been adjusted in construction. Or it may be including the bow roller and davits!
Anyway, it's a nice find; nice woodwork, a decent price, good gear, big engine, big tanks. Not sure about the ground tackle; it looks like there are 2 CQR anchors of different sizes. It's a big boat.

The photos are dated 4 years ago. It was in good overall shape then. If the paint has been neglected subsequently, it might be a different story.

Steel boats are harder to sell, hence the lower price, perhaps. I'd get a survey done - at least you'll find out the issues.

If you're looking at this boat, check at the insides of all the cabinetry for condensation. Check the sump in the shower/head (and below). Check any insulation that you can access. Crawl in the deck lockers and bilges, look at the rudder post, stuffing box and any void where water can accumulate.

You're looking for rust.

Hopefully it has an owner who can show you around and discuss any issues or maintenance that needs to be done. Try to get that person to come out for a day or two to show you how things work.

27,500 according to sailboatdata https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/compass-47-lavranos

designed by Angelo Lavranos. Looks to be an excellent design.

Apparently 7 in wood, the rest in solid fiberglass. If the numbers are correct the ballast ratio of 25% will be a lot lower for a heavier steel hull. That makes me wonder a bit.

1981 Tayana 37 - $6500 - Florida

Looks interesting because of the price. It's more work than I'm in the mood for at the moment otherwise I would take a look.
