YES, thats a good boat at a good price.

BUT....

The seller is introducing some confusion...in his favour.
The Tartan 10 is not a Tartan 33.

The 33 is a cruising boat with lots of amenities.
The 10 is a race boat with pretty bare interior.
The 10 usually sells quite cheap, since its mostly a raceboat. I'm not sure, but I think headroom is low.

It still may be a good deal, but I'd suggest reading up on the two models. The 33 is usually much more expensive, and its sneaky (to say the least) to call a 10 a 33 in the heading.

Very good observation and advice!
Good eye!

Those ARE different boat models, even if both are 33' long.

The Tarten Ten lacks the coach roof cabin, deadlights, and headroom, has a different keel design, and was focused on day sailing club racing.

The Tarten 33 weighs a lot more 10,000# versus 7,100# (for Tarten Ten) and has a standard, wider Scheel Keel, while the Tarten Ten has a narrow fin keel.

Here is a link to a boat that seems to cost many thousands more on Yachtworld....I have no affiliation with the seller, nor do I know anything about Formosa.

Perhaps some opinions might be offered by others....

First I looked at the photos, and immediately saw some water damage (staining) to the interior.

I looked at the ad, and read it completely. The ad mentions that the cockpit filled with rain water when the cockpit scuppers clogged with leaves while the boat was on the hard. That is not the first time I have read about that happening, and it strikes me that so many boats must be affected by rain caused damage like that.

I think the owner has done an outstanding job of describing in very good detail the boat, its condition, its gear and updating, and what he has identified as what needs to be done to get the boat ready to sail. Not every owner is as upfront and honest about the flaws of their boat. His boat description is exemplary.

This is an auction boat, at the beginning of the auction, and it is an unusual boat to see on the US market (built in Netherlands). So, who knows where the final bid price will be some days from now? It could sell for a relatively low price compared to other boats its size and age. It could be a good buy for someone.

I like that it has a solid deck and that they applied the Flexi-Teak covering after removing the original teak decking.

I don't claim any expertise with that boat model or type. But, here are a few points to consider:

The (Formosa) 41 type boats were popular in the 1970s and 80s, and may have different model or distributor (brand) names (this one says "Offshore 41"). They are getting old now and may require more maintenance and fixes than most new boat buyers would want to do or can afford. That is not to say they are bad boats.. Thee are many happy owners, including members of this forum. Searches of the CF archives should yield many comments from owners and past owners of that type of boat, and there is an active owner's group on Yahoo groups too (Leaky Teaky Yacht Club).

But, as with any boat, current condition is most important.

As I see it, one major negative point about that boat is that the ad says "engine rebuilt, needs to be installed."

To me, that is a Red Flag.
As I see it, the boat does not have a currently installed working engine.
The "rebuilt" engine is unproven until it is installed and run during a sea trial.
And it makes me wonder why that rebuild was done, but the engine not installed? Why leave that task undone?
And, it makes me wonder what else on the boat was "unfinished" tasks or deferred maintenance?

So, there is some risk in buying a boat with the engine yet to be installed, and the price should reflect that. As shown, I think the boat may be overpriced given its age, condition, location, model, teak decks, etc.

Much earlier in this thread I did post a profile of a boat that had an engine out of the boat, so my point above may seem contradictory. In that case, the engine was new (brand new, unused) and still in the crate from the manufacturer (Beta as I recall) and the boat was listed with an asking price (as I recall it was about $12,000) that essentially said "buy the new engine, get the boat for $1,000" or something like that. My point being that the engine alone had value, while the engineless boat had very little value.

Of course that is just my opinion, and it is based on the very little information in the ad, and my preference to avoid too many unknowns with used boats.

Well, you could feel the deck of the one Irwin we looked at flex when you walked on it for what that's worth...and that appeared to be in good condition otherwise.

1983 Oyster 41 for 20.000£ (27.000$).

1983 Oyster 41 Sail New and Used Boats for Sale - au.yachtworld.com

The description is vague and the broker acknowledges not having much info on the boat which could end up working in your favor if issues are mostly cosmetics.

Might be worth checking if someone is near.

That is a nice looking little pocket cruiser. I wonder how long those saloon settees are.

Just measuring them with a ruler on the floorplan it appears that the quarter birth, V births and the settees are all the same length although I'm not sure what that length is. I would hope for 7' but assume at least a minimum of 6'6". From what I've read about them this is a good quality blue water cruiser which appears to be in very good condition based on the pics.

However, somebody does need to show the seller how to set up a bimini.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Hi everyone, first post.

I thought this was a great thread for someone like myself and instead of posting a new thread I thought I'd post a couple ads here and hopefully get some feedback on them.

First a bit of backstory:

I'm a complete sailing noob. Although I have a beginner's course that I'm doing tomorrow, so I'm looking to rectify that before I purchase a boat.

My plan is to buy a sailboat as primarily a liveaboard and work fulltime for a few years while slowly doing a re-fit, or whatever upgrades/repairs are necessary so that I'm ready and confident for some weekend warrior / week long trips in my local area. The long term goal, after saving enough money would be to head south, and the dream is to cross the pacific.

That dream is a long ways off though, so I'm not looking for a boat that can handle all that right away, if it can, that's just a bonus. But I'm open to upgrading in the future if need be.

So for now I'm looking for a liveaboard that can handle weekend trips while I learn to sail and slowly upgrade as I go. I'm thinking 27-35' seems to be a good LOA, and as my username entails I want to be able to operate alone. My max budget right now is 40k CAD.

TLDR;

I just came across this Islander 36 in San Diego. Don't know anything about it but getting the boat with the diesel that can also be purchased for under $10,000 is a pretty good price. https://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/...574411392.html
