boats around 40 ft with large aft cabin

Dear CF,

Since some time I am looking for a centercockpit with a large aft cabin and a 2 person bed. Boat size around 40-42ft.
I know Contest and Moody but any other suggestions?

I can only think of Endeavor 38 and Peterson 44 both of which fall out of your size range but may be worth a look.

1) are you looking for a new or used boat?

Just a bit out of your size range but as i remember the Tartan 4400 has a pretty massive aft cabin.

Hughes 40 aka Northstar 80/20 might fit your needs, depending on you definition of “large.” Nice sailing boats if you can find a good one.

CSY 44 , a little bigger but very comfortable and good sailing well made boat. I have an Irwin 44 which was the original design by Irwin but purchased by CSY to become the CSY 44. I am 6' 1" 240 and it's a good boat for me. Another really great feature is the is only 3 easy steps down to the cabin. I looked at the Pearson 42 but it has a steep five step ladder to the cabin and that gets tiring when you are up and down several times a day and not easy in a sea way.

just to name a few. Personally I'm biased to my OI 41. Much older design. Slower but comfortable

Keep in mind any boat with a large aft cabin will not have a lot of aft storage.


My Hunter 36 probably has the biggest aft bed you will find on that size boat, a standard size queen mattress, although not a lot of room besides that. however, I do have a huge aft locker that seems almost bottomless.



When I made my purchase, I considered a Hallberg Rassy 36, which really maximizes the aft cabin as much as possible. Besides the higher price, my problem was that there didn't seem to be anywhere to put the fenders or an extra sail, a generator, anything large, unless I gave up the forward cabin and put them there.
