Boat is heeling in marina - owner says its ok.

Hi

I am looking at the Bavaria 32 (2001) at the moment, and I can see, that it sits heeled in the water.

When we have taken the boat out of the water, its heeling became very obvious because of uneven marine growth on the hull.

See picture attached.

The Owner says it is not in balance because of the empty watertank.
It sounds logical to me, however I have never noticed such boat behavior.
Can anyone confirm that this in normal? Please!

My benie also has a list to starboard, but not nearly that bad. I have 3 water tanks. One on centerline in the bow, one on stbd and one port. If the starboard tank is full, the list is obviously worse, so I don’t use that tank as much. But no matter if is empty or full, the boat stays within the boundaries of the bottom paint.

How many tanks does this one have? While it is still out of the water, see if you can tell if the keel is straight. Then when it is back in the water, fill the tanks and see what you think. I can’t imagine that you are going to correct that much list by filling a tank.

Could be water tank imbalance, batteries located improperly, etc... should be easy to tell by looking.

When does it go back in the water? Fill up the tank and see if he's right. Easier would be to calculate the weight of the water and get a couple or a few friends to stand on that side of the boat on deck.

She has 1 watertank (150l), but she also currently has the piece of iron ballast on the port side!
It is a big piece of iron weighting around 110 pounds. Is lies under the bunk in her saloon.
Now, after your reply, I am really suspicious about the keel....

We will do a sea trial next week. Good idea to fill the water tank. Thanks.

I have a Beneteau 400 and it lists to the starboard also. It seems that most of the storage , the galley, and the batteries are all on the starboard side. You would think that the designers would plan for this better.

Re: Boat is heeling in marina - owner says its ok.

For the water tanks, water weighs in at 8.34 lbs / gallon or 1kg (2.2 lbs) per liter if tank is in liters (for a Bavaria , it probably is...)

The further outboard of centerline the tanks are located, the more of an effect it will have on port/stbd listing .

Also, second the comment on batteries. If previous owner installed additional batteries in a side locker (which is common) it will affect the balance.

Also:

-Hot water tank
-Holding tank
-Fuel tank
-Stuff in lockers (spare anchor., outboard, heavy tool boxes, gas cylinders, dead body etc...) ..

As long as there is no water swishing around the cabin sole, I would not be concerned. As another blogger stated, fill the tanks and see how she sits in the water.

Launch the boat

Loaded with gear, fuel, water and provisions

check the list (heel is something completely different).

Use lead ballast (I use bags of reclaimed shot) to compensate for the list and until the boat is level. At the same time, look at trim (front to back). I try to place ballast amidship and as outboard as possible. move forward or aft of midship to adjust for trim as well, if necessary.

When I purchased my boat she listed to port 1 or 2 degrees due to a diesel generator mounted to port. I moved a battery bank with 6 batteries from centerline to starboard. It sits dead level now.

On the photo, it looks as if rudder and keel are not perfectly aligned, as if one of them is bent, either the rudder to port or the keel to starboard. I recommend, that you check this. If the keel is bent to starboard, that could be another cause together with water or batteries.

No this on picture is not normal.something is with keel.

use pipe water level toll, for a check now condition on dry port/stb side if alignment right. in front use Vertical Building Line Drop Vertical Pendant

and simple look roop, keel, saildrive ruder alignment. check inside keel bolts and around GRP must be surface like outside totally flat.

I vote for keel issue. Friend had one delivered new with improperly mounted keel some 20 years ago. Resolved under warranty.

Looks like a keel or Rudder problem to me. First check and make sure that the water line is in the correct place and level next check the Keel and rudder for alignment. Next carefully clean around the rudder post and where the keel meets the hull. Look for any signs of gelcoat cracking

Re: Boat is heeling in marina - owner says its ok.

I'm assuming you are looking to buy this boat.

A water tank, full or empty should not make THAT big a difference.

The 110# chunk of iron in a port locker (still the high side!) is a real red flag.

I'd look VERY carefully at the keel and it's joint with the hull for signs of damage and/or repair. Is there any chance this boat went ashore broadside, was pounded by the surf, and bent the keel slightly to starboard?

Caveat emptor.
