Boat Diver Question?

Hi all anyone ever hear of this called a boat diver today and this is what they said.

they want $100 hr to clean my boat 30ft sailboat they said it may take them 4 hrs and they don't scrape any paint at all of the bottom.
I asked them how they did that, they said, they take their time and have special barnacle removing tools.

Sounds crazy to me what do you all think?

Ask for a list of clients they have cleaned... also what tools do they use?

Wow, for $400 they better carefully pluck each barnacle off and deposit them on a reef to be eco-friendly.

Sounds way overpriced to me.

I guess it depends for how long you let the bottom go. There are boats next to me in the marina that could take a week to scrape and still not be finished, whereas if it has been two months and you just have slime, it costs $70.

Call another diver. We pay ~$3 per foot in the SF bay.

Going rate around here is $1 per foot, so I pay $30 a month. And I expect here is much more expensive then there.

$400 is outrageous. Crikies, what's a haul out there cost? $400 has to be a significant percentage of haul and new paint.

Call other divers. Look around the marina and see what divers are being used alot.

$66 per month for 44 Morgan in Madeira Beach, FL. Had a 64 year old guy clean the hull in Nassua last winter for $50 and without diving gear-he held his breath(!) and when he was done he lit up a smoke. We gave him $75 and a scotch too. Go figure

Time to get your dive certification and gear. I wouldn't recommend doing it the way I did. I bought and borrowed gear and after a couple years finally got my certification. That was a long long time ago and I didn't really know how dangerous it was until I took the classes.

lol that's the whole point I don't want to be cold and have worms in my hair that's why I will pay someone, and I do all my own bottom work it is 250 to pull out but I let it go over a year so getting it 30 miles with growth would be like a log raft with a trash bag sail hehe anyway I would pay $5 a foot if anyone knows a diver in Sarasota fl .I also fee dive my haul just to remove slime and clean my prop and don't find it dangerous at all but people near me think im crazy, I guess they cant swim. If you cant dive down to the bottom of your keel then I guess you don't need to be in the water with out flotation.

We pay $75 monthly for our 50' boat in Key Largo. Dennis does an awesome job and he's one of the few marine vendors that I don't worry about.

Here in the NYC area $2-3 per foot. Varies a bit for bow thrusters and other complications, but not a lot. Someone's trying to sell you a bridge.

I'd bet that's part of the problem. Routine bi-monthly or monthly cleaning is a LOT less work than using a machete to clear the jungle after it has grown for a full year.

It should be easy enough to call two other guys, see just what the local rates and the machete surcharge are in the area.
