Beneteau 42cc Advice Request
Hi all
I am exploring the purchase of a 2003 Beneteau 42 Centre Cockpit and am wondering if anyone has advice about the actual sailability (pointing, running, reaching, beating) of the vessel? Thanks for your help. Pitts (West Australia)

Re: Beneteau 42cc Advice Request
I'm not sure why your enquiry hasn't generated more response.
It's unusual on this forum.
Might be an idea to ask the forum if there is a Beneteau Owners Association. That will probably get you in touch with other Bene owners and you could go from there.
Also you could google Beneteau Owners and see what comes up.
Good luck.

Re: Beneteau 42cc Advice Request
A Google search should find more than a few Beneteau owners' groups. Some may have strong opinions.
My experience suggests that if your interest gets closer to buying then taking a group of racing friends on the test sail may answer your questions.
Regrettably we've found that discussion of individual owner's boats often detracts from the Cruisers Forum being a place that we all enjoy.
This is the Cruisers Forum, so the pointing characteristics of individual boats is not normally a major concern. The downwind manners on the other hand...
If you were to phrase your question in terms of a hypothetical boat (i.e. How well would I expect a medium displacement 42' fin keeled centre cockpit production boat to point?) you may elicit more answers.

Re: Beneteau 42cc Advice Request
I've also been interested in that boat, I test sailed one. They're a heavy boat for the sail plan,so don't expect scintillating performance. good all rounder , on a par with other cruising type Beneteaus. Heavily built boat , keel stepped mast, etc. I was/am interested in the bulkhead mounted wheel version.
The one I didn't like at all was the generator in front of the engine, makes serviceing it very difficult

Re: Beneteau 42cc Advice Request
We are looking at purchasing a 1990'S 43 Beneteau for the purpose of living aboard in preparation for going out the gate and making a turn either North or South. Any thoughts on this?

I assume you've been out of the gate before but do you know the vessel and her behavior in various seas? Kim

Re: Beneteau 42cc Advice Request
Try looking at the PHRF rating for a boat to get some idea of its performance.
PHRF of Southern California - Lookup
For example, a Bene 42cc rates 126 secs/mile, while a Bene 423 rates about 108. Look up some boats you are familiar with to get a comparison.

Re: Beneteau 42cc Advice Request
Hello Pitts, I have a 44cc Beneteau. It may not be the same as a 42 but our boat points, reaches, abd beats as well if not better than other boats of the same size. Reaching in a 20 mph wind showed a GPS reading of about 9 - 9.5 knots. A bit of spray that hardly reached the cockpit.

Re: Beneteau 42cc Advice Request
i have a bene 411(60,000ks)but have been looking at a cc42or44 reacently, i honestly believe them to be one of the most well designed cruising boats built(for the price)as for sailing performance 90%of benes are under rigged and drag a bluddy great big fixed prop around, clean bottom and a folding prop makes a world of differance to any boat.sail them slightly loose, even on the wind (keep them upright)i find a bit of twist in the main all-ways helps un less dead down wind.

Re: Beneteau 42cc Advice Request
I Have a Beneteau 44cc a little bigger but very close in design terms. This is my third boat and the ultimate cruiser in my view (well it would be - I bought it!) Its a great cruising boat but doesnt have racing performance. Its designed as a fast cruiser and ticks all the boxes for me. Performance is very good in all points of sail. The one I have has circumnavigated twice and im taking her on a third circle. The solid windscreen in the cockpit is one of her best features in my view especially going up wind in a blow. I can't figure out why every sailboat doesnt have one of these. She has plenty of weight, is strongly built, and gives great confidence in a big sea. Very comfortable and spacious below with a huge aft cabin with private facilities and even a sit down Bath! Dont go for the bulkhead mounted wheel , it feels like your driving a Truck.
Good luck.
