Bayfield 36- Thoughts?

Well built Canadian boats, but they all are getting old. The hulls should hold up quite well and would be worth fixing up. It's the gear attached that may be the bigger expense. If you found one in good shape I would add it to your list. These are cutters made for heavy weather and hauling stuff. You can't win races except that when the wind picks up many other boats will be heading back to the dock when you are still sailing.

I agree with Paul. These are strong, quality, comfortable boats and in Good Condition they can take you pretty much anywhere. For logs from some people who sailed one for years in the Caribbean go here:

Just a bump, I have been considering a B36 and am having a difficult time finding user info.
I know about the Yahoo Group but feel they might be a bit biased in there opinions.
My plans have me moving to Texas next year so I am in no rush.
I will be sailing with my nephew, having 2 ready berths will be necessary.
We will have family visits and plan to give up one berth when they arrive.
I wonder about gear locker space, we are both divers.
If possible I would like to carry a hooka dive compressor rather than SCUBA tanks, we can rent when needed.
The little info I can find seems at times to be conflicting regarding performance and ability.
All that is agreed on is it is slow. Some say wet, some dry, poor cockpit drainage etc.
I have also not seen any B36's in my local area so I will need plane tickets for hands-on.
Anyway, just a bump.

I believe there are two up for sale in the PNW at the moment.

I have heard they are considered large for a 36 footer. I think the Bayfield 40 is basically the same boat with a bowsprit and ketch rig - which kind of supports the large 36 foot comments.

They tend to go for 70-100k used in this area in CDN dollars.

There's a nice one for sale here in Daytona Beach. Think he's asking $55K. From what I've seen and heard she's in good condition and had some serious refitting lately.

Very similar to Bayfield are Gozzard cutters built more recently by Ted Gozzard. As the Gozzard fleet ages there are some good buys becoming available.

Great boats, crewed on one in Florida for several years. Slow in light winds, but with their heavy displacement they point well and you will catch up with the fleet in strong wind/waves. Well built, more than adequate engine power, great headroom in cabin, lots of room for six adults in cockpit. Only issue for sunny climate is that amount of exterior wood rails, so you will spend lots of time with sandpaper and varnish cans!
