Bayfield 25 singlehanded

So after much debate and compromise with the folks on here I feel like I may be willing to settle on a bayfield 25, built in 78 she's an old bird but maybe has a few more flights left. I'd like to get a few opinions if she would serve me well as my first. Here's the link

Bayfield 25 Sailboat - with launching highway trailer | sailboats | Thunder Bay | Kijiji

My main concern is, and I don't know exactly how long the mast is I can only assume it's stock and according to the post it has been stepped, could a person raise and lower this mast singlehanded with any available system sold in a marina or on the Internet? It's a main focal point for me. And if anyone has any other advice, especially considering her age whether the price tag is appropriate. Thanks in advance, Duane.

Re: Bayfield 25 singlehanded

Hey!

I own a Bayfield 29 cutter. Awesome boat! There is a Bayfield site on Yahoo if you wish to gather some additional data on the 25. A friend of mine owned one up to last year, then sold it and purchased a Gozzard 31. I can give you his e-mail addy if you want to contact him with questions....pm me and I can send it to you.

The 29 is for sale if your interest in the 25 wanes.....it is loaded up with all the toys and then some. We just purchased a Stevens 47 and I really do not think we will use the 29 again......but you never know

Stout boats, heavy, well made. The 25 has a deck stepped mast, most marinas have a gin pole that you could use to step the mast. The pics on the 25 look pretty good, and if it has been in Thunder Bay for very long, probably has seen little usage.....something about cold weather and thick ice puts a damper on sailing

Good luck in your search!

Hahaha, yeah it gets a bit chilly up here, thunder bay would be a snowman's wet dream. Thanks for the offer, but I've been trying to keep it on the smaller side. Is there a way however to raise mast whilst not being at a marina? On the trailer or while motoring?

Hey Duane:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/bayfieldyachts/info

Lots of great info at above site. You can also go to sailboatlistings.com http://www.sailboatlistings.com/sailboats/Bayfield and click on Bayfield, all the Bayfields on the site will come up, great way to do some comparison shopping.

I do not know about stepping the mast without a gin pole.....no experience there. I really cannot comment not having raised a mast on a 25 or even watched someone else.

Nice boats though, especially for the Great Lakes. Very well constructed.

Good luck in your search!

They are awesome boats, but 11.5K seems a bit steep.
How much are you paying for the boat and how much for the trailer?

Way too much $$ for a Bayfield 25.

The price includes trailer and boat, and the price is in Canadian dollars.

Oh I may have misinterpreted the question if it's how much would they sell for separately I have no idea.

What would you consider more reasonable?

Thanks, I took a look they seem to average out to the same price range, minus a few that are well over or under, the difference being they don't come with highway trailers so it's kind of hard to judge.

Re: Bayfield 25 singlehanded

The trailer could be worth 5k and the boat 6-7k which in normal for one on the west coast, the trailer will allow you to sail all over........... ever the Gulf Islands out here, make sure the trailer is worth it and in good condition, most big marinas have a way and someone to help you raise the mast........ Not something you want to do for a Wednesday evening after work sail.....

Re: Bayfield 25 singlehanded

Good Old Boat magazine has had some articles on raising a mast that might help you. Many years ago I had a Seafarer 24 with a deck stepped mast (similar size). I was young and strong then and with my two brothers managed to raise the mast in the slip with no gin pole, just barely. You can use the trailer winch to the halyard to lift the mast but you need to seriously stabilize the mast side to side. Good luck and enjoy the beautiful boat.

Re: Bayfield 25 singlehanded

I have a B25 and made my own stepping system that is pretty much singled handed. In a nut shell, I made a copy of the boom goose neck mount and attached it to the front of the mast, this allows me to use the boom as gin pole, the main sheet does the heavy lifting, and a set of wire cables keeps it all upright. Check out the Bayfield user group for ideas and pics of similarly set ups.
Good luck
Pete

Re: Bayfield 25 singlehanded

Good boat for the gulf islands. We sailed down from Lake Ontario to the Bahamas in a1979 Bayfield 25. I just sold a Bayfield 32c which we kept at Point Roberts for 4 years and now have Wind Borne III (Bayfield 36) in St. Maarten. The nice thing about the Bayfield 25 is you can take it home and save money on moorage. As you can see, I am a little biased towards the Bayfields but do not believe you can go wrong if the boat has been taken care of. You will see allot of Bayfield 25's as well as 32's in the PNW.
