does anyone know how far south down the Queensland coast do the crocodiles live . not the ones moved by mankind . but the ones that live naturally ?. give or take 100miles ??

There have been reports of one in the Pumicestone passage (behind Bribie island) for years, but I have never heard it verified by an unimpeachable source.

Don't say that Jim.I used to enjoy standing in the passage up to my thighs fishing for whiting.
We have been here for about 15 years and the only Crocs seen in the water are the Chinese ones .

I hope that you are correct! Sharks don't bother me much, but crocs scare the crap out of me... evil personified!

Crocodile reported at the rocks at Blacks Beach.
A land based survey has been conducted from Eimeo Creek through to Blacks Beach. Recent warning signs are in place. Staff will continue to monitor and survey nearby creek systems to ascertain if this particular crocodile is a resident or moving through the coastal area.

Since crocodiles have been protected in Oz, their population has expanded southwards. People say that it is too cold for their eggs to hatch around Moreton Bay, so that an individual might live around there for years (absent predators), but not create babies to follow. However, one does wonder if maybe .01% of the eggs might hatch, a cold resistant one. Mutations do occur. DNA throws them a lot. So I suppose it's possible that the OP in Maitland might experience a NSW croc in his lifetime, but I'd be willing to bet he won't!

As to the rumor of one in the Pumicestone Passage, well, you know how Ozzieslike to try to scare Yanks and Kiwis with tales of snakes, spiders and crocs! Not sure I can believe that, either.

If global warming from climate change is as bad as they say the crocs will be colonizing Sydney Harbour within the next couple of years.

Not that I get scared unless my mind starts it's 'bad case scenerio' mind set and I start thinking 'what else in the water'.

Sharks are on my list. Now Crocs? Are these the really mean hungry Crocs that will take a kayaker. Are they like the South American Crocs? I read 3 kayakers were close together to look like 1 large object. But a Croc still got the guide. The two poor scared guys w/o a guide had to be super worried they were next.

Lots of ways to go...shark, croc, storm, lightning, snake bite, eaten by a snake, bomb, gun, stroke, heart attack, etc. etc.

I think a Croc would at least be a fast way to go.

tuffr2, you might want to watch a video of how crocs kill. Generally, they drown their meal-to-be, then tuck them under something that will keep them under water to age and soften, prior to eating a few days later. They are able to stay submerged up to 2 hrs., and their eyes are adapted so they can see in murky water. They are said to be able to leap up from the water to a height of 1/2 their length, which puts you on your topsides within reach of a large one.
