So if you do get a boat you going to put it out on Lake Santa Fe or you moving out of Hogtown?

Alachua huh? Nope, thinking of putting it in Lake Alice or Newnans and sail with the gators. Probably StAugustine.

If you're going to Newnans Lake you better buy a shoal draft boat.

Actually I'm in town, my boat is in Alachua. The profile photo shows where it's currently parked, under a live oak. Hauled and will launch again in Green Cove Springs and head out from there.

Will launch as soon as I finish overhauling the boat, hopefully in a few months. Initially will hang on the east coast, maybe a trip to the Bahamas to do some diving over the winter. Next summer probably back up to New England, drop in on my daughter on Martha's Vineyard.

The next year after we're both retired the plan is Europe. Kind of been there done that with the Caribbean, not that I've seen it all and wouldn't want to go back but have a hankering to see something different.

A full keel boat doesn't have a skeg - the rudder is attached to the aft end of the keel. A fin keel, usually of medium length, often has a skeg hung rudder.

Re: Anyone heard of Gary Maul?

Gary Mull was a designer ahead of his time. I own a Mull 9.5m here in NZ and cruise and race her in the Tauranga NZ region. She still picks up positions in the local racing circuit and I would go anywhere in her. A true boat for all conditions, cruising and racing. There is little information on the sail data sites about the Mull 9.5s here in NZ but they have a good reputation, even among boats from some of the great designers we have here in NZ. Gary Mull was quite revolutionary in his day and added his innovative flair to some real step changers in the sailing world, not least the Freedom un-stayed yachts which he took one step further in innovative development and the Pocket Rocket 22 racer he designed. The Chico designs he developed for the NZ market are still going strong with a keen following. Yes there are faster, fancier and smarter designed modern boats nowadays, but Gary Mull was a true sailing innovator for his era and beyond. He died too early.

Re: Anyone heard of Gary Maul?

I own two Gary Mull-designed boats, a Freedom 36 (often called a Freedom 38 because of the sugar scoop) and a Newport 20, which seems to be rarer than hen's teeth. I love his boats and many, such as the Santana 22, still enjoy very active racing fleets. He knew how to build them for San Francisco conditions. I have a copy of an interview he gave a short while (I think) before he prematurely died of cancer. If anyone would like a copy, send me a PM. I am interested in knowing more about him, too.
