Any well known issues with a 20 yr old Hunter 42 Passage?

Hi, I had a look at this Hunter 42 on the weekend, and it ticked a lot of boxes for my family. It is bloody expensive compared to the same boat in the US. Other than that it has everything we want.

Are there any well known issues that need to be looked at/fixed with a 20 yr old Hunter 42?

I am not looking for personal opinions on Hunter boats , so please stick to answering my question

Cheers!

I have a 2003 Hunter 44 deck salon in Lake McQuarrie I have owned for four years and can't say any major issues with the boat at all. They are a great boat

I had a client from Texas that I sold a bit older Passage 42 too that he sailed eventually to Australia. That being said, issues I know about these boats based on previous brokerage sales. If hatches are unframed plexi, they tend to warp and leak. Have the B&R Rig professionally evaluated by a professional rigger. We're starting to see issues with some masts and rigging on this age Hunter now. Have the decks solidly inspected for any moisture issues and see if you can find out if there is coring in the hull above the waterline. We have seen core issues on a few passage 450's in the US on this age boat. Other than that a good survey should bring up any other issues.

No matter what some "nay sayers" may say about Hunters, I am still in love with my Passage 42. Best boat and most comfortable one I have owned. No issues so far after 10 years ownership.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is coring in the hull?

Thanks for the great info!

Hi Fursoc, we like our 1996 Hunter Passage 42 CC. Leaking portholes has been an ongoing concern. Hard to find parts for the hatches and portholes. Love the room and sailing performance of our sailboat.

Regarding price what the same boat would cost in the US is not relevant unless you're considering buying over here & sailing it home. If you're buying in Australia what matters is whether the price is competitive in Australia. I'd recommend hiring a Broker with access to a database of sold boat prices for a comparative market analysis. Also not a bad idea to have a professional represent your best interests in a transaction of this size.

Why and how someone else can represent my best interests?
