Any Ontario 32 owners out there ???

Hi:

Mine is coming tomorrow by truck to sit outside the back door until launch next year.

Known stuff to fix and do:

Most wiring including shore power (galvanic isolator or transformer?)
marine battery charger (good by old faithful Canadian Tire automotive ...)
battery boxes and battery restraint
Most seacocks and hoses
Cockpit floor core and core under the primary winches and under one stanchion
Rebed everything
seals on opening ports
A few engine bits
take apart, clean, and lube winches
epoxy small keel crack
Companionway boards need major fixing or replacing (if fixing, they are not going to look good, too far gone)
pull and inspect chain plates, inspect standing rigging

Like to do (if I can talk myself into spending the additional cash):

up house batteries to something like 4x golf cart batteries for 450A-H, this would involve moving the batteries to ... where???
auto pilot
fix or replace depth and knotmeter
solar panels and charge controller

Like to do, but not as badly as above

more robust inverter?
lightning measures?
second high output alternator

Love to hear from Ontario 32 owners with any sage wisdom. I never found a web site, but owners must be out there somewhere.

Cheers,

Boulter

Re: Any Ontario 32 owners out there ???

Congratulations on what I think is a great boat. Yes, there are things I'd do different, but it's served me well.

Here's a link to a photo gallery of mine, most interior pics are on page 13 and some on 12.

Be sure to check the rudder for water intrusion.

I made a starboard shelf and placed my 3 Group 31 AGMs in the bilge, inside battery boxes screwed down to the starboard. I could have put 4.

I redid all my wiring AC and DC with new panels for both. Toggle switch between battery monitor and cigarette lighter outlets is for the panel backlights.

I don't come here hardly at all, and only am replying due to another member bringing up your post. You can find me at SailNet though as same user name.

Re: Any Ontario 32 owners out there ???

Looking for dimension of foredeck btwn the coach roof and the chain locker.
I'm looking to buy a Plastimo 4 man life raft
the dimensions of the canister version is: 29-1/2” x 19-5/8” x 8-1/4H
Would you know if there is room to mount this on the fore-deck forward of the cabin top aft of the chain locker.
If not I'll have to take the valise version and hang it from aft framework of the cockpit.

Re: Any Ontario 32 owners out there ???

If this isn't the most well-travelled Ontario 32 in the world, it must be getting close:

World Cruise of Veleda IV

My wife crewed for them a few years back, and Judy was my dentist about 20 years ago, so it's a small boat in a small world...

I have a Viking 33 from the same builder, Ontario Yachts. They did very good work in my opinion, and C&C designed many of their boats.

Does anyone know the recommended torque specs for the keel bolts on an Ontario 32? As well, should this be done on the hard or in the water?

Contact Aubrey of Veleda IV above...or call Ontario Yachts...they are still in business.

Please replace automotive battery charger with a marine charger, your and your neighbors zincs will last longer and you won't kill anyone swimming close to you boat while it is plugged in

Happy New Year.
Are there any Ontario 32 owners on this page? I am interested in the boats, but there is not much info on the net. Given the size and age of the fleet it is surprising. Perhaps age s the key factor here.
Any information on the boats would be most helpful : strengths, weaknesses, modifications, improvements, build quality and most critically, sailing capabilities.
Thanks.

Re: Any Ontario 32 owners out there ???

New owner of 84 Ontario 32. On the hard now but will launch in spring after bottom scrape and paint. Still trying to figure out all the systems. Looking for other current owners who I can talk to about issues. Still haven't worked out the use of the secondary waste tank in the bilge. Really like the idea of putting the house battery bank in the bilge. After reading Kretschmer's "Sailing a serious ocean", not sure anymore this is a good Atlantic circuit boat even though it has at least one proven voyage,i.e. Veleda IV. Really wish it had a traditional staysail stay.

Re: Any Ontario 32 owners out there ???

Welcome I just sold mine and your to do list is a good one. Mine had a Yanmar and I did the 500 inspection because I did not know the history. As far as the wish list goes I would go for the auto pilot Mine did not work but after I repaired it It was a must have" The extra batteries are a personal thing. I cruised the Great Lakes and never was short of power. I spoke with an owner who had crossed the Atlantic twice in his and would not do it again UNLESS it was in an Ontario 32 My 2cents
