Re: anti fouling paint for the prop
good information but I am in Florida in saltwater , tropical environment
our biggest problem is barnacles that kill the power and strain the engine
any saltwater experiences out there?

Re: anti fouling paint for the prop
I keep my catamaran in West Palm. It's the one I use Prop Speed on.

Re: anti fouling paint for the prop
Hi, bimini blue,
We, too live in salt water and are using "Prop Gold", which works just like Prop Speed. You will have to wipe it occasionally with a sponge, and the barnies just wipe off. The timing during application is pretty critical, so follow the instructions carefully, and be ready to start the next coat right after the primer. In our usage, it lasts maybe 18 months.

Re: anti fouling paint for the prop
Three years in the Pacific and the prop speed is still good.

Re: anti fouling paint for the prop
I've used prop speed and others.
If your boat is going to be sitting for anytime at all in south florida waters, like ICW or in a harbor, then propspeed is definitely not the answer.
Propspeed works by making the prop too slick for barnies to stick but if the prop isn't spun every day or two then the slime buildup on the prop gives a place for the barnies to stick. Then you have to pop them off carefully. Do that over a couple of months and the prop speed loses a lot of slickness.
I have found that sand blasting the prop, acid washing it, laying down a coating of zinc barrier, and topping with a non-copper bottom paint such as hydrocoat SR works just as well or better because it doesn't matter if the diver messes up the prop too much. Its a lot cheaper as well.
Yes, the very tips of the blade lose the paint quickly but the barnies never seem to stick there because the zinc remains intact.

Re: anti fouling paint for the prop
Like ZBoss, we have not found PropSpeed to be very effective unless the yacht is underway every day or two. Absent that, one still has to scrub the prop with a 3M or similar "scrubbie" pad to remove the barnacles.
FWIW, an acquaintance in our basin claims that something known as "PropGlop" works well and can be applied and reapplied while the boat is in the water but we haven't tired the material as yet.

Re: anti fouling paint for the prop
I tried various takes and none worked. Any paint leaves residue and then living stuff sticks to this residue. I found very very clean prop, no paint of any kind, easiest to clean with 3M pads. And clean I do.
PropSpeed is well worth a try. It has many owners swear by.

Re: anti fouling paint for the prop
Another Prop Speed proponent. Critters spin off (we rarely don't sit still for an extended period of time).
However, be sure that you or a diver uses nothing harder than a 3M scrubbie, or you'll damage it. Once it's off, the prop behaves just like any other untreated prop.
2 applications per 200ml set for our 19" MaxProp...

Re: anti fouling paint for the prop
What about those props made from nylon ? Does anyone here have any experience with them. A nice glassy surface might help getting growth off easily. Tell us what you've experienced with nylon.

Re: anti fouling paint for the prop
Prop Speed, my powerboat actually went almost a full knot faster with prop speed than it did with a clean prop with regular anti fouling paint on it.

Re: anti fouling paint for the prop
so I went to the prop speed website for more detail
it is not anti fouling but anti stick and is intended for props that are turning on a regular basis, ie daily weekly. It will improve performance in that realm
if however the boat is not used regularly it will not prevent slime and eventually growth which could become the seed bed for barnacles
I keep my boat in the Indian River Lagoon, central florida and have the bottom and prop cleaned monthly, seems like that is the thing to keep doing
thanks to all for your comments
