Boat: Creala 40 Pilothouse
Posts: 28
An interesting boat we found and now own.

Hello all, I wanted to drop a few lines because most folks we talk to about this boat are quite interested in hearing about it.

We have a 1999 Creala 40 pilothouse which is the fifth of five hulls ever made, and sort of served as the prototype for the Pacific Seacraft Crealock 40. Ours is the only pilothouse and is lovely in some ways, but an odd duck in others.

Trust has a Yanmar 4JH2E motor which cruises around 6.5 knots in most weather at ~70% throttle (2450 rpm).

42’ LOA
12.5’ beam
15 ton
Cut away full keel
Closed aperture prop and skeg hung rudder.
Mostly teak below decks.
She is 64’ from masthead to water and has a formidable 19’ boom
Is cutter rigged and sails well to windward

I’m trying to post photos! If you have a Creala or have fun stories about Crealock I’d love to hear them. I have a few passed down by the boats first owner. A humble and incredibly well travelled sailor.

Welcome Aboard CF, Trust!

It seems a great boat for the PNW, with the pilot house; and she's a nice looking boat!

Fair winds,

Ann

What's odd about her? Looks pretty solid to me

The pilothouse is laid out pretty poorly, ultimately. As a result, putting 4 people aboard means that at almost no time can everyone be sitting around the settee comfortably. The settee itself is VERY poorly designed and not quite deep enough to sit comfortably unless you're on a starboard tack .

I have personal beef with the location of the raw water impeller on the Yanmar but that is a different matter entirely.

In the end, this boat is perfect for a cruising couple, but not a live-aboard one. I know because I tried it!

This fall we'll haul her out and install new rigging. She has 3/8" 1x19 with Norseman lowers fore and aft, as well as the two cap shrouds and inner forestay. The rest are 5/16".

We're planning the addition of solar to keep her topped up when on passage, and not running the motor whenever possible. We'll also invest in windvane steering to keep battery consumption low as well. The previous owner took the SSB antenna, so we're trying to figure that out as well.

A very nice looking, and seemingly solid boat.
Congratulations - hope you have many years adventuring with her.
