Americas Cup Foiling AC75 concept

Check this out.

I do agree with several of the comments that these foils could be very dangerous & possibly lethal in close quarter situations.

With boat speeds n the 40 knot plus range, closing speeds approaching 80 knots, ya don't need foils to have lethal accidents!

Yep, it won’t be just helmets next time around, but full body armor for the crew.

Let's not get carried away here Don C L!

I think you'll find that the windward foil is made of a softer, more collapsible material than the leeward foil!

They need to remake Water World so Kevin Kostner can have a foil battle with one of these. Right after he drinks his own urine again.....

The first thing that popped into my mind was Messala's chariot in Ben Hur, followed by the gladiatrix cut in half in Gladiator.

The speeds are less than those of racing cars, but I don't know of a motor racing class that would allow such a projection, especially a ballasted one.
Another objection for me is that the 'hanging foils' will constrain close-quarters manoeuvring, which is surely the point of match-racing.

Re: Americas Cup Foiling AC75 concept

Can these foiling monohull sail boats sail in rough conditions, (6-10 foot swells etc) or are they like the Cats that require placid seas?

I like the ocean racing boats, they are way cool imo.

yeah, yeah, get off my lawn....

Big Moths, but I have my doubts they will solve the engineering challenge of ballasted foils that will be regularly, and quickly, hoisted and lowered in such a large arc. Think of the forces on that hinge. Think of the money that will be spent building the prototype alone. I could buy two of my boats for that. Maybe 3.

But there's only going to be two at a time. Here's a Moth race with a lot of foiling Moths flying around (there are other videos):

This concept is poorly thought out. Unintended consequences scream out. I understand that each crew will be strapped into an ejection seat with no movement allowed on deck.

Of course it will be!
Oh, sorry, on course.
Darn autocorrect.
