Amel Super Maramu

I am looking to solo-circumnavigate from age 65 to about 70. I sailed a lot and as a refresher I crossed the Atlantic about 2 years ago. I would like not to spend more than $200K including purchase and initial “refit”. I am focusing on a “Amel Super Maramu 53”, but I would love to share your thoughts. Thank you so much,

Re: Amel Super Maramu

Big boat for one person and the market has been bid up because people see the one on the s/v Delos youtube channel and want to be like them. Outside your budget. They are best understood as quirky ketches that are perhaps somewhat better designed and built than other yachts intended primarily for the Med. Lots of bespoke bits and bobs that have to be special ordered from France during maintenance or refit. There are better choices for your situation.

Look at Caliber 40 LRC, Saga 43, Tartan 3700 or 4100, Catalina 42, Island Packet

Good luck in your search.

Re: Amel Super Maramu

Within the size range that Jammer just recommended, we just bought a Northstar 80/20 (aka Hughes 40/Swift 40/Hughes Columbia 40/etc.), for about a tenth of what a Super Maramu would have gone for. The previous owner was an older gentleman who sailed her solo, and had little trouble handling her and keeping her up. Can't comment on how much more of a handful a Super Maramu would be, never having been aboard one, but they're way out of our range, and the more I look at them, the less I want one.

Re: Amel Super Maramu

yesthatsue in post #3 is probably right: not too many Super Marumu-s for sale under $200k US, and if they are, might need serious investment to bring it up to scratch for a round the world trip. Hmmm, "investment" might be the wrong word, as the funds will not a see a return.
The way I see it, the poster has 3 options then:
1. increase budget by at least $100K (to $300k) to get that Amel, otherwise
2. get a smaller and/or older Amel (Sharki or Marumu, er even Santorin), or
3. get another suitable boat, and yes there are hundreds of boats around that are suitable.

Hmmm, Saga 43 was mentioned, a beautiful boat that really sails well but more a handful for a singlehander. The 53 ft Amel is easy to sail single-handedly.

Last comment: whatever boat the original poster ends up with, the preparation for any boat for such long trip will cost money, in addition to the purchase price, "initial refit" the OP said. That can be as little as 10% of the purchase price or more than double, all depends on the maintenance the boat had in previous lives, the condition of it equipment, and the wishes of the new owner.

Good to know someone else thought about this first. I just posted about the smaller Amels on the other thread. Ahh, duplicate threads.

Good luck and fair winds.

The Amel owners group has all the information you need.
Super maramu is designed for a couple to make passages.

Re: Amel Super Maramu

To hit the budget and a good sized boat, as suggested would drop down to a Amel Santorin (46').
Did a quick look at YW and there were a few from the mid '90s that were updated and would fit your budget.
For a solo or couple world cruiser, the ketch rig does make sense. We like ours due to it's versatility of sail plan and it isn't "quirky". We only sailed sloops previously and until you sail a ketch, you really do not appreciate it's practicality. Wouldn't recommend a ketch rig for a someone looking for a day/weekend sailor, since they most likely would not use the mizzen much/at all unless it had in-mast furling.
The earlier Amels were were built and well thought out for short handed offshore use.

Re: Amel Super Maramu

great boats and absolutely manageable... but... not for 200k.

any SM you can find for that price will not have been cared for and will require significant work (both time and money) to get it up to snuff...

300k is the range to target for one that is in decently kept up shape that you can immediately use.

I love these boats, but as others have noted, there are other good boats in the 200k price range... build your list of required, like to have, nice to haves... let this guide you. You may in the end decide that this is in fact the right boat for you, in which case you'll need to find the $$ or you may find that others also meet your needs for less and you can go now.

NET NET: it's too personal a choice to let others steer you here.

Re: Amel Super Maramu

To what others have already said about the Super Maramu being likely too expensive for your budget (either by virtue of purchase price, or by need of refitting), I might add: Those Amels are *very* systems-heavy boats. They're swimming in electrical and electromechanical gear, much of which is kind of essential for working them short-handed. Keep in mind that the maintenance of any systems-heavy boat is going to suck up either a fair fraction of the skipper's time, or a fair fraction of the skipper's wallet, or both.

If your budget is $200k including initial refit, there are an awful lot of good 40 to 45 footers on the market for ~$120-$150k USD right now. That leaves you a comfortable margin for overhead etc. and initial work to actually get the boat fixed up the way you want it. Don't be tempted to push the budget to the limit; that usually ends in tears when something comes up late in the process that the bank just can't accommodate.

Re: Amel Super Maramu

The OP didn’t state where he was. Geography could play in this. Wa see a lot of Amels in the Caribbean. There is a base of many in LeMarin in Martinique at the marina. We note that they tend to roll more at anchor than most other boats.

We started in the Great Lakes and are now beginning our fifth season in the Caribbean. You might consider the Lakes in your search. Lightly used boats with zero salt exposure. Most have few blue water systems so your stuff will be new. Here is the brokerage at the marina where we started our journey. Good uck to you.
