How does that high aspect rig play on a boat this heavy? I guess the genoa powers this boat....

Here's a nice thread also.
https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ds-161812.html

Looking at it from my point of view, however, when getting up to those prices, it's not far from an Outremer 45 ...

And I'm just about (almost) happy with the light wind performance of our current Hanse 388, so I'd rather the next one be faster than slower.

Yes : a 40 footer with the room of a 45 footer, and the price of a 50-55 footer.

For the price of a 40ds, you can buy near 4 (!!!) used Hanse 455 ...

A Hanse 575 would have the dinghy thing sorted out My compromise plan with the 458 is that, okay, I will have to deflate and inflate it every time, but at least there is a big enough bow locker where I can store it.

Last I checked the base for the 40DS was ~500k euros. I seriously considered the 40DS, and the Tartan 455. In the end, I decided on the Discovery S42 for the raised saloon and swing keel.

Not wishing to undermine the Moodys and the HR all of which are fine boats if you have the budget but you might want to look at the new Bavaria C range which offer good protection, secure deep cockpits, dinghy storage, tons of handholds and a fair lick of speed and volume that belies their length and all for not a lot of money (relatively). Your budget is the "production" end of the market, (assuming you want new or nearly new), however these boats are not all about form over function or to quote "med surf boards". They do sail very well and many sail the globe and are incredibly comfortable.

Thank you for the encouraging words about Bavaria! I will certainly go have a look.

Well produced boats FTW

I've sailed early 2000s Bavaria 37, which I really liked (tough; not a surfboard.) The new C series to me looked a lot more like the new Hanses.

I'm curious: Is there a difference that you have noticed sailing them?

The C45 does look like a very nice boat. Also, Hanse is announcing the 460 here soon (if not already).

I think structural strength and the 'surfboard' name-calling don't relate. It's more a classical vs modern design thing, to me. Advantages to both.

Here's a new Swan 48. It looks quite much like a Hanse, so good choice there Now just replace the serious guys with fun and family

There is also the Beneteau Oceanis 46.1.

I would say that Beneteau Oceanis .1 series and Bavaria C series are close, and compete for the same target market.

The Hanse 8 series are a bit older. To my understanding, the 458 is a 455 rebadged with cosmetic modifications. And the 455 was no more than a 445 re-looked and renamed. In fine Hanse 458,455,445 = same hull (with same bulkhead position) , same keel, same rudder, same rig, about 10 years old design. Only minor deck /coachroof / cockpit redesign.

Now these sailboat are mainstream production boats. Anything different, with the same age will be either more expensive, or smaller. Or both : smaller and more expensive...

No huge differences, for sure!

Still, the deck looks quite different (well, everything is relative of course ), there are some differences in the rig+sail figures, and big differences in Hanse's performance guides (the underlying parameters might have changed, obviously, also in ten years).
