Been looking at Seawind MK2. Found one in really good condition for what seems to be a good price.

I've read what could about them. Perused the owners association website and joined the mailing list.

Just looking for as much info as possible.

Thanks
I assume you know about Project Atticus?
If not check them on Youtube.

Although that’s a seawind, it’s not a seawind II.

Got it. I did not know there were 2 Seawinds.

"n 1975, Allied began building the foot-longer, foot-wider, Thomas Gillmer-designed Seawind MkII as a replacement for the original 30-foot, 6-inch Seawind. The extra foot of length and beam, 1½ feet of waterline length, and 2,700 pounds of displacement added up to make the Seawind II a significantly larger boat than its predecessor—and it was also significantly more expensive."

Rover hi-

Steering was fine, wheel pilot steered it just fine, and I know of several with vanes...there’s a thread about installing a Cape Horn on one - a very neat install, actually, no ropes all ever the cockpit.

@Seamonkey from the maintenance and engine logs I saw when I looked at the boat it appears the current owner has meticulous about keeping up with maintenance though the boat is due new rigging 1

The issue I'm most concerned with at from the initial viewing is the rust around bobstay tang. Does this picture raise any concerns with you guys?Click image for larger version

Re: Allied Seawind MK2

You could replace the attachment with a beefy external plate/tang that is through-bolted to the hull. That's what I did on my boat. At any rate, I would remove the fitting to see if there is any corrosion where it enters the slot in the hull. Often stainless steel looks fine, but there are microscopic fissures that lead to unexpected failure. Personally, I like SS fittings to be external so I can keep an eye on them and polish as needed.

It’s not really possible to remove that tang without systematically deconstructing the V-Berth and grinding out all of the glass that holds it in place.

We just replaced ours with a bolt on tang from spartan marine.

https://www.spartanmarine.com/all-pr...te-assembly-12

It’s bolted into the stem @ the lowest extent of the chain locker. The angle change on the bob stay was less than 1 degree by going this route. And bonus is the tang is removable and inspectable.

@sailmonkey
What size replacement bobstay did you use?
What did you with existing bobstay tang? Leave it in place? Cut it off?

Our bob stay is 5/16” wire with 1/2” pins. Plenty strong. We’ve left the original tang in place....might even use it for something some day.

I don’t have much. I’ll try to remember to take a few photos of it tomorrow.

Here it is as seen from a pic taken for other reasons.

It’s not really easy to see here though, but you can just see the old tang beneath the new one.
