Final acceptance from the Jeanneau dealer next week on a 2015 Jeanneau 349 used as a demo boat this past season (US Great Lakes area). She's still in the water. The full two year factory warranty will be applied to this boat.

Would you still get a survey?

With the warranty I would do my own survey , perhaps with a knowledgeable friend in tow to pick up any point that I may miss.

Congratulations on your new boat, JK.

I try to shy away from offering opinions, but in this case...

Having participated in new boat shake-down cruises in the past, I would answer "absolutely" to your question regarding a survey.

In addition, I would be surprised if your insurance company didn't require one anyway.

I suspect a survey will be the least of your commissioning expenses, and with the right surveyor, well worth it.

I would also be surprised if your final acceptance isn't predicated upon [among other things...] your approval of a satisfactory survey.

The one in Michicgan? One could argue that the price is so good, that could still live with having to fix a few things. Or one could argue that the price is so goo, you should take some of the money you are saving and put it into a survey.

Used as a demo? Absolutely. And your insurer or finance might ask for that in any case.

I had a new house built quite some years ago. When the builder was done, and before I signed off on the final payment, I hired an inspector to go over it and check everything out for me. When you're talking that much money, the cost of a professional once-over is peanuts.

So, yes, I would definitely get a survey on a new boat. And since one that has been used as a demo really cannot be called "new," you better believe ABSOLUTELY YES!

Absolutely, survey it. Is it reportedly built to ABYC specs? Have make sure it all was.

Thanks to all for sharing the gift of expertise. Was leaning towards no surveyor but now am 2nd guessing the decision.

Anyone know a good surveyor in Cleveland, OH?

Thank you Cheechako. I do trust that Jeanneau builds to the specs they set up. This is a 2015 Sun Odyssey 349.

The 349 is actually built in the U.S.

I've looked at a couple Demo boats, and I find the dealers definition of Demo is not the same as mine

. It's not like a car where it was used for 30 minute test drives. In my case the boat was overnighted on by employees of the brokerage and perhaps even chartered for a a few days here and there - which I guess is what a demo boat is for. Doesn't mean a nefarious use of the word Demo, but it does open up the possibility of broken stuff that may not have gone reported. So ya, I would get a survey. Great boat BTW.

Add me to the 'absolutely' camp. You survey may be the best money you ever spent. The time to argue with the dealer about needed repairs is ALWAYS before you close the deal. That is your only leverage. No reputable dealer should object.
