pirate A Monkey RACE Boat List

OK, SaltyMonkey has a thread going for his next cruising / live-aboard slow life boat, but suggestions from throttle jockeys out there online got him excited and dancing about other inner wild-monkey needs (no he won't go to the dark side but likes the fantasy). So, here's a question to answer, and I think it may help others if they decide to go about bluewater solo racing:

GIVEN:

Boat Buy Budget: < $100k **
Optimal Boat Buy Budget < $60k **
Use: Bluewater Solo Racing (e.g. Transpac, Transat etc)
Length Constraint: between 30-42 ft
Design Constraint: Must be a production racer/cruiser or cruising design from a major manufacturer that can be converted into a race boat.

QUESTION 1: What boats would you look at?

QUESTION 2: How would you modify it?

** outfitting costs not included in budget about. this is strictly an amount to buy the boat up front.

Yes Sailmonkey, but the Mini 650 is not a retrofit of a cruiser or cruiser racer. Its built custom for that sorta thing these days. There is one manufacturer in the USA I know of:

The M65 • Fine Sailing
another famous one
Pogo 2 Features
have fun!

SCHOCK - nice boat doodles!!!

I know, I've never sailed a racer/cruiser that I really liked for either. As racers they're sluggish and as cruisers they're slappy

Fair enough Doodles. You can talk him down to $99k and the euro is falling. Maybe we should just list some candidate manufacturers first:

Beneteau
Dufour
Hunter
Catalina
jeanneau
tartan

any you want to add?

Ok,
beneteau; one of the older FIRST series
Hunter ; The legend 37.5 sails wonderfully
Catalina ; Hmmmmmm Racer/Cruiser.......
Tartan ; the ten seems like an ideal, but not much in the way of
cruising ammeneties
How about J-boats
the j-36 and j-37 seem to fit the bill (although may be a little on the high price side)

Or for that matter, almost all of the CCA boats fall into this category.

Good stuff SailMonkey - Hunter and Tartan to measure and think about!

Hunter looks terrific. Lots out there to pick from.
