Came across a 1986 Aloha 32 .

Just got a copy of the survey the owner had done. It doesn't say when the survey was done. Only 4 pages in the survey so I'm sure there are missing pages and info.
One thing that got my attention is the engine Westerbeke 21 with 2410 hours .
It is a raw water cooled.
If any one can give me an opinion on this Boat. Is it worth it and if it is what to look for.

Thank you again.
Suggest you make yourself familiar with the very different levels and qualities of marine survey reports.

Thanks BoatPoker.

I read everything you wrote twice already. To get some idea what to look for. Not that it makes me good at it, but I got something to work with.
Your site is a must read for everyone.
The one thing that is hard to know is the reputation of each boat make and model.
It helps to ask folks about a particular boat and what to look for. I got to thank everyone on here for that help.
Can't wait to get my own boat already...

I'm sure you've heard it before but let me reinforce ... As long as the boat's ammenities and layout meet your comfort level, The brand is inconsequential. Condition and maintenance are paramount when looking at a vintage vessel.

Learning to sail is the easy part, learning how to change a filter and bleed the engine when she stalls in a harbour entrance is critical as is learning how to quickly (sometimes very quickly) change an impeller is also critical. Learning the difference and causes of galvanic or stray current corrosion is important as is knowing the cause of a strong hydrogen sulphide smell.

I am a believer in buying your last boat first. It will save you a small fortune.

The more you know of marine systems the better boat you will end up with.
It can seem overwhelming at times but the rewards justify the effort. I wish you well.

Or quite possibly cost you a small fortune (or larger) when you find that your inexperience led you to buy the wrong "last boat".

Buying your last boat first suggests that one has done sufficient self education before cracking the checkbook.

BP, with due respect, I feel that it is pretty hard to do that self education without owning and operating a boat yourself... and that is the point of the
starter boat.

Re: A bit more boat help please.

I think that depends on whether you are in your 30s buying your first coastal cruiser or you are 65 buying your last RTW yacht. The OP is in the former group.

Unless you are delos and buys your dream amel right off the bat.

Between those two, I'd lean to the Cherubini! Get a good look at that one! Don't forget the surveyor I told you about! I am pretty sure he'll drive down there.

Re: A bit more boat help please.

Well I'm 54 so would say I'm somewhere in the middle lol.
But before I spend so much money I want to see how I like the sailing part. How bad my sea sickness will be. If I feel that its too much to handle then it would be land travel. That's another reason we are not looking for a boat that is expensive. It would be a learning experience, figure out what we really want and need.
I know that a boat is a never ending repairs and maintenance. My dad had a 1965 wooden power boat, yea I know what it means to work on a boat.
Same time we want a boat that we can sail not work for the next year every weekend and day off. I'm ok with work and in a way I do enjoy it. To start I don't want major repairs. Does it make sense where I'm going with it?

Some boat like Catalina are a known formula as they are so many of them. After a while you know what to look for. some boats are one off and not much info. Those boats I try to ask about. Its same like finding a car Honda has its own problems compare to Toyota.
But get a Kia or a Hyundai and it depends on the year and model of the car. Then stick in there an MG or a LADA. Cars I know and understand boats I don't, I need to learn.

Come on up, we'll go sailing, it'll calm your mind... although it has gotten a bit chilly lately...

Sorry, that was my mistake - now that I remember, I looked at the Hunter link first and the Ericson link second, so that stern-mounted outboard stuck in my mind (it may just be the dinghy outboard).

That Hunter does look good. And as I said, I've read very enthusiastic comments on this Forum about Hunter Cherubini's specifically.

One guy recently said something to the effect that he was sorry he ever sold his to upgrade to a bigger boat. He felt the decision had been a mistake.

That speaks well of that model.

Good luck with seeing it. Owner also sounds accomodating. It's also a good thing that the boat is being actively sailed (as opposed to sitting on the hard abandoned in some yard somewhere...)

Warmly,

Re: A bit more boat help please.

Went out yesterday to look at boats and nothing to talk about. Mostly Catalina and one Ericson, All need work some even major work.
Today we just went for a nice very long hike for a work out we needed.
When I came back I found an interesting boat but as before never heard of this model and close to zero info. I turn to you folks again for advice and opinion .
It's a bigger boat then we looked at, if its a good boat it might be a keeper.

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lg...231658840.html

I emailed the seller and posted my questions and his reply on here.

I would like to know what is wrong with the deck. If it up to my skill level to repair it?

Deck had teak removed, screw holes were all filled and the deck was coated with epoxy. The problem is that the walnut anti-slip that was applied is way too thick and it is coming off due to thermal expansion/contraction. Easy to remove with a putty knife and then repaint. Skill level is about 4 out of 10 - was going to do it myself but just do not have the time.

Also, what brand engine you have and did anyone check to see what is wrong with it?

Universal 32 hp diesel. My mechanic installed new injectors and a new fuel pump. He said the injectors need “crunch bushings” and has them on order. Also………….the top end was completely redone about 4 years ago.

Anything else that needs repair of maintenance ?

Guy who cleans the bottom said there are 2 very small blisters. The water pump needs a new impeller.

What condition the bottom and thru hulls? All thru hulls are good. Bottom needs antifouling.

Rigging?

Rigging was redone about 10 years ago -very thick stainless line using the best fittings.

This is a very nice boat but, since I live in Riverside and run a business, I just do not have the time to dedicate to this project.
