'84 Rhodes 22 - Thoughts?

Looking at purchasing a used 1984 Rhodes 22'.. Boat appears to be in good shape but I am wondering if anyone has heard anything else about this manufacturer? I don't know too much but it appears to be a decent boat... Anyone out their have experience with Rhodes or heard much???? Thanks

The Rhodes 19's that I sailed were made by Schock. They were tough little boats well suited for beginner sailors with the occasional collision. Try to find out who made yours.

$4200 in this market seems high. Ask for $2500 and meet somewhere in the middle.

My first boat and the only one I regretted owning. The manufacturer is unreliable IMO and the boat he sold me was nothing but problems and almost sank under me and my family.

For $4200, you can get a bigger and better boat, in many areas here in the US.

On edit: the quality of this boat has no resemblance whatsover to other boats designed by Phil Rhodes. It's really not a good boat.

I'd really get an opinion from teh Rhodes list I posted. There are threads as active as July 2009 so the group is not dead.

At $4,200 asking and the owner deceased you oughta be able to drive a had bargain. Not to be cruel but it has no value sitting in the current owners from yard.

I would be cautious to determine if the seller has the right and clear title to sell it seeing as how the owner is deceased. It could be caught up in probate...

I am little cautious seeing as how the "CIA" found all that suspicious info on the owner, who ever the real owner is.. I will check out the postings but I can't help but think the Rhodes group may be a little bias seeing as the majority of them probably own Rhodes.. I started this search looking for a Catalina but not that I have seen other options I began to reconsider. I found a 1986 22' Spindrift for sale at $4300, Photos are attached.. Thanks for your help once again.

That Looks very similar to the Rhodes and McCurdy designed Seafarer 24 that I own. The interior is a very different lay-out though, I like that one much better for weekend cruising. My boat is solid.

Rhodes was a designer, not a manufacturer. Check this site and see if you find that boat there.

Seafarer built good strong boats, but the Rhodes 22 was not built by Seafarer. This link provides the background info on the Rhodes 22:

If one wants a gimmicky boat that was probably put together with questionable build quality, that's what you'll get with a Rhodes 22. (now he's evidently putting a furling main on this thing... how can one possibly justify a furling main on a 22-footer?) Seafarer built good strong simple boats that one could be proud to own and sail. Two entirely different operations.

$4300 seems steep for both of these era boats, since if they are 'original' they are going to need a complete going-over anyways and in _the least_ the replacement of all throughhull/seacocks and cockpit drains. Also many times things such as standing blocks, rudder mounts, and other important hardware needs replacement/rebedding in the least.....and possibly replacement of even more expensive parts such as the rudder itself if its 20+ years old. In other words, despite how 'nice' or clean the boat may look on the outside, if its old there are guaranteed a lot of things aboard that need replacing if they are 'original equipment'.

In today's market $3500 should be more than sufficient to get a nice example of either of these boats, trailer included. Add to that the cost of going over the boat for the above mentioned items.

speedoo--Sorry to hear about your experience with the Rhodes22. Most of the owners select the boat because of its high quality and manufacturer support, but I'm sure there are exceptions.

Here's a link to a survey by SailboatOwners.com. The Rhodes22 ranked #1. Before going out and buying a Rhodes you'll want to look at the non-scientific approach to the survey. It mostly expresses owner satisfaction.

As for price it's all relevant to the changing market. I'd offer less but good luck finding a used Rhodes that cheap. Good luck finding a used Rhodes22 at any price. Owners tend to die before giving up their boats; no offense to your seller.
