What was said was there were about 200 boats through South Africa in "the season," kind of a gate for boats going round. So the guess being made was there are about 200 boats that FINISH a circumnavigation each year. If you figure an average time of 5 years, (scale up or down as you think appropriate..) that makes about 1000 boats who are actually circumnavigating each year, if they know it or not.

Sounds about right to me. It's not 100, it's not 10,000. I'm betting there are not any Newport 28s in this year's class. Just a guess.
Defined thataway, yep, I agree.

Re: 28' newport blue water ?

It depends.

Some will be braver (more foolhardy) than others, some even row across oceans.

But best to choose a model that's already been there, successfully survived making rough passages under different crews.

To me, even if I never do true blue water or RTW, I want to start with a boat that I know could be upfitted to do so if I ever decide to go for it,

without having to start over again with another boat new to me.

And since my preference is a small boat, by today's standards, and older models, that additional filter doesn't have to add much cost to the initial purchase price.

Getting it fully ready may easily cost 10x that initial amount over a few years.
