27 Knots??

I'm just a lurking wannabee, but I stumbled on this.
78ft, two for a crew, and 27 knots???

absolutely barbaric! If Gawd had wanted sailors to move that fast he would have made us more aerodynamic! I think its a Meth lab and it just seems fast.Not many cruising boats go a small percentage that fast. I think you would have stretch marks from the g-forces. and dont think about falling overboard. The boat would be is Spain before someone noticed you missing!

Don't tell Boatie... with that American Cup racer he is bringing across the pond it will be intersting to see how fast it will get up to.

If he sees this he may try and beat it. And he may have the boat to do it in.

Be serious! The day that a retired 12 meter can get above HALF of 27 knots will involve Niagra Falls and a navigation error! Those beautiful boats were not very fast, even compared to the ocean racers of their own times. Weatherly, beautiful... sure they were, but they were heavy displacement boats with relatively short LWL.

But Boatie may have his hands full anyway...

LOL... one of the stories that came with the boat is when the last owner, wife and a couple of friends got caught with all sail up by an out of nowhere blow.. reckoned they hit 22kts..
No.. not into trying to get anywhere near.. if she'll give me 200+ a day I'll be happy.

What's the hull speed for a 78' boat? It just does't look like 78' in the video. But there is a lot of sail up.

About 12 knots for a displacement hull, but this looks more like a semi- planing hull to me. Or is that semi-displacement? 77' LWL x 16.9'B x

She was named the Beowulf, but the owner-designer, Steve Dashew, I think sold her about 5 years ago. I don't know what happened from there.

The normal hull speed formulae doesn't apply to a boat as long and thin as Beowulf is. This class is truly something else...

Sadly I am not in the market for a world cruiser, but her sister-ship just hit the market for ~$500,000. Talk about a steal at that price.

A class by herself indeed... Beam is one reason she doesn't look like an 80 footer inside...

Yikes. So I went back and looked again, it isn't a Beowulf sister-ship, it's her younger sister the Deerfoot 72 that is on the market. 1985 Deerfoot 72 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

As with all Dashew boats I think you have to sign a contract saying you will put 10,000nm/year under her keel or be required to sell. But like Beowulf she is long, lean, and capable of reeling off major sea miles.

I finally remembered... This is the boat owned until recently by Stanley Dashew (Steve's father) who passed in 2013. It very well may be the only Dashew design with a relative paltry number of sea miles, but only because Stanley suffered from Parkinson's and instead of world cruising only weekender her (though did so frequently).

So ya... One of the most iconic designs in the world, owned by the designers father, and professionally maintained since new by the same crew.... I am thinking $500,000 is a steal.
