2001 Catalina 36

I'm considering purchasing a Catalina 36 in the near future. Anything to watch out for? Just sold my stinkpot and ready to get back to sailing. Appreciate any feedback from the Forum.
This boat has a shoal draft, new stack pack, solar panels (200W), original rig, 600 hours on Universal engine, asym spinnaker, dinghy Seems to have been well cared for. Asking $90K
I plan to use this boat for coastal cruising only, up and down the E. Coast.

I think the boat would be a good choice for that use. Surveyor and/or insurer might want you to replace the standing rigging at that age. Off the top of my head the price sounds a little high, but I've not researched the market for that model.

Catalinas tend to hold their prices better than most. I have a friend who bought a 36 two years ago, and has put another $50,000 into it, including $25,000 for new instruments/autopilot. She got rid of the head odor by converting it to fresh water flush. The only issue left is a noisy engine at idle, which is probably motor mounts.

Re: 2001 Catalina 36

We had a 1999 C36 mark II, and it was a sweet sailing boat with plenty of room for a couple. Every current and former owner I’ve spoken to loved their C36, noting the sailing character, good build quality and value. Stainless standing rigging in salt environment is suspect after 10 years, and certainly 20+ is pressing your luck. Wing keel will not point as well as my fin keel, but you’ll find more anchorages with that extra 18 inches. Suggest looking at new sails as many owners delay purchasing as they do not appreciate how much better the boat will perform. Only issues I had cruising it was a ridiculously small holding tank (15 gallons) only gives you a week, even with an electric head. There is an active owners group with plenty of support and technical guidance at: https://www.catalina36.org/

Agree with Reeve21 that $90K sounds high for the boat & dinghy, and perhaps you should recheck your comps. Of course, the quality of the boat in question and recency of upgrades is paramount. My well-maintained C36 with inflatable sold for about $75 in the middle of the covid seller’s market, and I thought I took the guy. Also, 600 hours on the engine of a 23 year old boat? Do they have proof it was repowered?

The C36 skippers have a very good website, forum and FB page. Great technical resources.

Difficult to provide an opinion without being the survey.

Parts for universal engines can be difficult to come by and the low hours is suspect.

Price seems on the high side, but that depends on where you are (used prices dropped a lot last summer).

Yikes, 25k on instrumentation? For that kind of money, you should be able to sail your boat with a controller from the beach!

Re: 2001 Catalina 36

i'm thinking the 90K asking price should definitely be negotiated.
