1989 CAL 28 in Toronto

Hey,

I'm looking to make an offer on a 1989 CAL 28 in Toronto. I'm trying to establish whether or not the seller has it priced fairly as I don't want to insult him with a low offer. I'm not finding many comparable boats in my area so I'm hoping you fine people can help me out.

Details are as follows:

Model & Engine
1989 Cal 28
18 HP Yanmar Diesel Engine (hours unavailable)

Sail Inventory:
Original Main
120% Genoa (Seller doesn't know the age or type)

Equipment:
Handheld Garmin GPS
Lowran Radio
Depth and speed gauge (not working)
No windspeed/direction indicator

I've looked at the boat and generally speaking, it shows better than many other boats I've looked at of this vintage. It's been sailed in fresh water only around the great lakes. The boat feels bigger than it's 28' and I like the layout of the cabin. I've had a chance to look at the boat and my main concerns are as follows:

1) Anchor locker door feels dangerously soft
2) Helmsman's seat is soft
3) Signs of leaking in the aft cabin window
4) Running rigging appears very old. (not sure how to judge if this needs replacement or not)
5) Cabin and cockpit cushions appear to be originals and are really showing their age.

Seller is asking $26K CAN (about $19,500 USD). I realize this is a bit of an info dump, but does anyone have any opinions on whether or not this is a fair price? I'd also be interested in opinions on this type of boat in general.

Preface this with the fact that much pricing is local. But in Florida this would be a very high price for any under 30 foot boat.

Way too much. Get a CS 30 for that price. A much better boat.

You sound somewhat inexperienced. May I suggest Marine Survey 101 before you make an offer.

Look around on Yachtworld. There are enough boats on there that you will be able to determine whether or not the asking price is fair.

what are you worried about insulting them....if they dont like the offer they get to keep the boat.....
remember....its usually harder to sell a boat....and very easy to purchase one

Agreed that the asking price sounds high. For that price, I'd expect the boat to be PRISTINE and fully up-to-date.

If the seller doesn't know about the sails and the maintenance is in the described state, it sounds like an estate sale (Grandad's boat)... and frankly it should be maybe $15k...dependent on survey!
