Re: 1989/90 Whitbread Maxis...
Great topic! I worked with and sailed with a few guys who sailed on Fazisi in the 1989/1990 Whitbread. I heard a lot of crazy stories.
I don't know if you have seen this page, but it gives current info on all the Whitbread boats.
Whitbread/Volvo boats - where are they now | The Daily Sail
Oh and here are some pics of Fazisi that I grabbed off of the net. Interesting design by Vlad Murnikov. I did a bit of MORC sailing on his MX20. It was a pretty cool boat.

Some pics of Kialoa IV in the Golden days hand to hand with Nirvana, another fantastic Maxi, Nirvana pulverized the record in the 85 Fasnet, at first sight is another Maxi, but is one of a hell boat beating to windward..
The internal alu framing is from Kialoa, truly amazing!!

Re: 1989/90 Whitbread Maxis...
And this is the tragic end for the beautiful The Card, hull in kevlar and carbón a revolution in that era, worth to see the YouTube vid showing the card in a collision and surfing DW..
Vey sad end for a fantastic boat, tired of racing, the owner decide to send The Card in 2012 to the Jurasic Park for old Maxis,Whitsundays Island OZ ,to make tourist trips.
The boat break free from the mooring and in the rocks. Write off.

Yeah, i remember that beast, Alain Colas trying to beat Erick Tabarly in the 1976 OSTAR , transat , but end bad for Colas , Tabarly won the race.
I mean Colas have nuts trying to handle such a big boat alone...

Rick Tomlinson @ www.rick-tomlinson.com likely has some good pics, though you'd need to contact him. He was a crewman on "Drum", & some others, as he honed his photographic skills. And now, that's his primary gig.
