1980 Pearson P-40

hello all,
I am looking at 1980 Pearson P-40 sloop. Can anyone tell me about it?
How does she sail? good blue water boat? What about the keel?
Will it travel the world if I am capable? Thanks, I am new at this stuff.

Average PHRF is 111 which is a bit faster than a Cal40 so maybe average or a bit faster with racing levels of effort expended. Cruising I would think they were about even or the Cal might be a bit faster, I think it's set up better.

Adjusting for length and beam and just looking at the non-ballast weight it looks like the boat is built fine, not terribly strong, but certainly heavily enough to go offshore.

I would pick this boat for sailing with a family in the Bahamas or if I wanted to cruise the canals of Europe.

I think the boat is rather big for a solo sailor or even a couple.

I don't think I'd go cruising with someone else in anything much smaller than that.

After Xmas '82 Cabo San Lucas debacle, L&LPardey et al made the observation that boats over about 37' were almost impossible to manage at anchor with just 2 people during the unexpected, short storm that occurred. 29 of 45 boats were driven ashore, most were a total loss. Many of the people that lost boats but were going to go cruising again indicated they would buy smaller boats because of their experiences in this storm.

Solo I would get a boat 28'-34'
Couple: 30'-37'
Family: 35'-40'
