1980 C&C 40 as a blue water boat?

I've been shopping around for my first boat, going to live aboard and cruise. I will be stationed out of Seattle.

I found THIS BOAT

It seems to me as though she has potential.

Looks to me like with some love she would be a really nice boat.

I was wondering if anyone else here has a C&C 40 that can share their experiences with this boat

Not sure if you have seen these:

While I don't have any firsthand experience with them, if it is in good shape, I think it could be fine for "bluewater" but it does not have the typical characteristics as a "bluewater" boat. As with any boat, but especially for the PNW, make sure it has a really good, fresh diesel I'd say. Personally, and this is just me, I prefer not having a spade rudder on a cruising boat for issues of strength, but if this boat calls out to you, definitely give it a good look over! Good luck!

Thanks for the info! You are right on the rudder, it is the only thing that really concerns me on this boat.

It's the PNW. A dodger or even a full enclosure might make life a bit more comfortable even as a liveaboard and that's a big ticket add-on.

But she seem pretty well set up for racing :-)

Macblaze yes a dodger would make liveaboards and winter sailing a bit more comfortable however making your own dodger isn't all that spendy . That is if you can learn how to use a sewing machine.

I've been playing with ideas for a hard top setup to mount a set of solar panels and a wind generator. Really need to get my hands on the boat there before I can really figure something out but I was thinking just make a canvas cover that went from the hard top over the top of the companionway so it would keep everything inside dry.

CC's are good sailing boats. Watch out.... a lot of them have cored hulls... you need to be very sure that is not an issue.
As you can see in that boats pictures, colored gel coats fades very badly. It may be able to be brought back to look good.
Another thing to watch for is those bolt on aluminum toe rails. They are very handy, but they are very prone to dripping /leaking over time also. Very hard to fix. If there are any signs of leakage whatsoever... just RUN!

I will keep that in mind, I definitely do not want to be dealing with coring below the water line.

Oh using a sewing machine is easy. Done it tons of times. Now making something come out of it that actually matches what you were trying to build...that's a bit more of a challenge

I own in the past a C&C 40 , the trick here its a premium good surveyor since if there is no big core surprises , and the hull, deck, keel are sound,, could be a good deal, if not, run miles away!!

The cored hull has me pretty nervous.

Honestly, Hyde OEM furler, not good, and looks like lots of things need replacement,, anyway, the rod rigging maybe is toasted after all those years, they don't mention what diesel brand, but if is the old Universal, hehe well, I don't want to sound a smart negative ass but hey look carefuly each detail, after all is your money...

The more I look at this boat, the more I realize they are being a bit wishful in their thinking on the price.
