Check the encapsulated chainplates they do not show damage until they let
go. All 3 arebwelded together and buried under the fiberglass. Saw this with
my own eyes.
Sorry.

I can recommend Paul Fannin if you need a good surveyor in the Seabrook area. Did my boat for purchase, no complaints. And I've seen a lot of surveys the paper they were written on was worth more than the report.

If you keep the boat at a marina they will want liability insurance, usually $300K and your insurance company (if you can find one willing to insure an older boat- try Progressive) will probably want a current survey.

Possibly I was wrong about the Irwins. I just recall them looking stout during that period.
Catalina and Hunter didn't impress me. I had a 27' O'day which wasn't fancy with the curtain and such but was a decent boat but had a lee helm.

Re: 1979 Irwin 37 -- Thoughts?

friend of mine lived aboard one for several years. comfortable liveaboard for one or two people, or short term cruiser for a family.

overall not a bad boat and certainly worth what he's asking. but if you know little about boats, and this is a lot of boat - not a sunfish - i would suggest you hire a surveyor to look her over and a mechanic to go over the engine.

if it checks out ok you've got yourself a bargain....

My friends Tommy and Alica owned that boat in Kemah, Tx. We buddy sailed with them to Pensacola, Fl in 2015. From there they sailed with 2 kids, 2 dogs, 1 cat to Maine and back to Texas. They sold it approx 3 years ago.

Jamesiv, any updates? I've seen the same post. I'm currently in Wyoming, but about to head back to the gulf. I've not talked to seller. Please update the thread if you decide to pass on this one.
