1969 CAL-34 Head Sink Depth Indicator Box

Just a bit of trivia. Someone out there on the interwebs was wondering what that box under the head sink was for, in a 1969 CAL-34. Per the owner's manual (which I still have), it is "...an optional Depth Indicator Box, located below the head sink." Here's a photo of mine, before I permanently removed the cover and installed a normal thru-hull transducer inside it.
