Obviously some people in Australia take good care of their Historic vessels.

and do not get out the chain saw or reach for the tub of resin and fiberglass.
It is taking continuous good care of a vintage vessel not restoration after years of neglect.

You may be able to donate the boat for a tax deduction.

If this is of interest contact me at hap1000 me com

I will need photos, size of the boat, and location.

Re: 1912 Huon Pine Timber Sail Motor Boat

My father chose to rebuild an old wooden Alden sloop in the 1970s that was built around 1938. I spent time helping. I think the lesson was that the end is inevitable with wooden boats, and you need to enjoy working on them probably as much as you do sailing on them.

Another lesson is that if you suddenly find yourself taking on water and sinking, make sure you sink deep, because the salvage guy always gets paid first.

Good luck

Re: 1912 Huon Pine Timber Sail Motor Boat

I worked on a guys wood boat a few years ago. Steam bent and replaced a bunch of broken frames. New horn timber. New stem. He was into it about 30k and not even close to finishing. He gave up and had to pay someone to cut it up. Forget about it.

Huon pine is highly sought after. Are there any good bits in her?

Well, Tassie II did suffer some neglect, plus she is a very lightly built racer... not the best bones for longevity. Her race record, I think, is what saved her from doom. She excited some feelings of pride and nostalgia and she was fortunate to end up in the hands of caring and experienced folks w ho have done a lot of restoration, followed by ongoing maintenance by some skilled shipwrights, taking care of the owies that such boats suffer, even when well loved!

It has been fun seeing her come back to life.

Huon pine doesn't rot.
Contact Australian Specialty timbers in Strahan Tas on (03) 6471 7190 or https://www.facebook.com/morrisonshuonpinesawmill/ for any advise and for any timber needed.

She's a sweet old thing. Just learn how to fix the bits needed to keep her afloat and you'll get lots of satisfaction from the process.

Do note that the OP hasn't been heard from for a couple of years now. I hope it is because he has been busy refitting his boat the proper way.
