Its a proven design and the boat the copelands sailed around the world with their three sons, Liza has written a number of cruising books and the reason they chose the first 38.
We had spent a few years looking for a first 38 when we purchased our 42.
If you don't mind doing a little cosmetic issues, it might be a good buy.

Judging by the price, the fact that here are NO interior pics, and they say the interior needs work, I'd be prepared for the below decks to be in disastrous condition. As in is/had been flooded. Big project. For the low price, it could be a good project, but likely a BIG project.

Re: 15k bene at great price....not my boat

what is it that makes it look like it had sunk?

This is just me, but most boats I looked at when looking for my boat, made me want to redo almost everything anyway. Only difference was the price the owner was asking as they all needed total redo.

I figured there had to be something as 40ft for 15k seems out of place, but at the same time, a boat on the market for 30-40k that has been on the market for 1+ yrs is out of place equally. Could they just be realistic and want to sell it instead of letting it sit for a year or more?

I don't see anywhere that actual sold prices are posted. My friend negotiated a deal for about 60% off asking not long ago, seller backed out! He is looking again for another boat.

so a 30k boat could sell for 15k, could be this seller just decided to cut to the chase and turn people down who came in with lowball offers instead of waiting forever to get someone who is looking to pay the 50% of 30k and feel they got a deal. Same price ultimately, just different (faster) ways to get there.

Looks like its in annapolis. If I did not have my boat, I would probably drive out there today! Wouldn't hurt anything.

+1

I would look for HIDDEN flooded/sunk issues.... Wiring/panel/electronics being first and foremost....

Great project for the inclined though!

Look at the cockpit shot and then closely around the visible windows. Green and what looks like mildew or algea. Could have been sunk. That said, if properly pulled from water and quickly and properly handled afterwards, a sinking is not terminal, just means a bit of work.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Yep, sunk boat. First pic has an '07 registration sticker on it and the lines are clean. Shot of the cock pit shows most of the lines on the boat which all look like they were submerged for a bit. You don't see that sort of uniform discoloration on lines that have mildewed in the shade when that boat was on the hard.

Bulkhead work? Yikes. But for $15k it could be a good price. And that's just the asking price, with the owner not providing full disclosure.
