One thing I learned in the Army, was to not have a short timers calendar, sort of like a watched pot not boiling, if your counting the days, it seems to take forever.
We are down to less than two years finally ourselves.

I feel our experience is the exact opposite. I have a countdown calendar on my computer at work. I don't really look at it all the time. But the number of days that I have left is part of my sign in password at work, so every time they send me an alert that I have to change my sign in (every 90 days) I change it to reflect the number of days we have left until retirement. I never fail to be amazed that 90 days have gone by already. It seems to be flying by to us, probably because we have so much to get done and so little time left to do it all.

Here's one
If you find the idea of killing and eating fish just moments after you caught it off your boat cruel, then go ahead and starve, I'll eat all the fish.
btw, I've been counting down the days till I get 20yrs in the Army since day 2900 or so, now down around 872. So I'm very happy that number is getting smaller.

Must be different for us Navy people then. One of my great daily joys each day was changing that number. It got pretty small before the civilians I worked with figured it out

Rethink this cruising.

Mate, if that DOESN'T scare the crap out of you, you don't have enough sense to be a good cruiser.
Give us a break from all these silly ideas!
Jim
PS: I had to go up about 35 feet in a gale once when much younger... got the **** beat out of me and scared to death all the time I was aloft. This is serious stuff, and has considerable risk involved. Damn scary to me...

Re: 15 Questions to answer to see if you're really ready to cruise.
Went up a 75'+ mast in a major ocean race in winds I'd now rather not remember. The headsail halyard was jammed at the top of the mast. I got volunmteered as I was the only one aboard who wasn't seasick already. Not quite sure how I managed it but I vomitted directly into the cockpit. At the time it seemed a lovely form of revenge for all the bruises, scratches and scrapes I was getting while they thought it was funny that I was up there.
I fully agree, Jim. There's nothing nice about those sort of experiences.

You should consider writing as an independent income source. That was excellent.

Yea, so am I! There have been many troublesome things mentioned,- up the mast, troubleshooting clogged heads, wet & rocking wet long nights, difficult repairs, tight spaces, hurricanes...... Sure, this is part of cruising and sometimes it puts you in isolation.
One day runs into the next,- We've been suffering this life for 43 years. So, bring it on! I can handle a little more of this misery!

Re: 15 Questions to answer to see if you're really ready to cruise.
Hi all,
First post to this forum. I was holding off as all the posts that I was seeing were years old. Nice to see something current.
We are hopefully going to take possession of our future live a board later this week. An Islander Freeport 41'. We're buying the boat in San Diego and cruising it up to our home port in Channel Islands Harbor. Wife retires in December but we should be living on board by November. We're planning on doing the Ha Ha 10/2016 then to points unknown and if things go as planned across the pacific in about another 2 years. We've been sailors but not cruisers, yet. We are super excited to be this close to heading out for the journey of our lives.
