Re: 1.5 Mil. To spend….

There was an Amel at the Annapolis show 2 years ago but I don't remember one last year. There are at least 2 on the used boat market right now.

I thought the entire point of cruising was the destination.
If it was the passage, cruisers would be sailing non stop, not sailing for a week and then parking for 6 months.

Anyway, its only 12.5 knots, even decent monohulls are capable of those speeds
we just have different perspectives, to me...the passage and the destination are not two different things.

Re: 1.5 Mil. To spend….

OMG, please... before you put your foot too far down to pull out: a 12.5 displacement hull would have to be nearly 90' long. On the other hand, a 60' Chris Craft is not a displacement hull, but a planing hull hence a 18K-20K hull speed. Sooooo....
Hull Speed = 1.34 * (LWL)1/2

Of course that is theoretical and healed sailboats have longer waterlines than their staic waterline when not healed over.I'm happy to average 200 miles/day with a 50 ft static waterline on a 58 ft boat. You would need about a 100 ft displacement hulled trawler to do better than 12.5 kts. Try buying that for 1.5m.
Did I say trawler?
I thought I said mono
Plenty of monohulled sailing boats that can do 12.5
and I made no mention of their length either

You pair do realise that powered catamarans behave entirely differently to heavy displacement powered monohulls, right?

And have a look through this list
Heavy Trawler style Boats For Sale plenty of displacement vessels in that list between 50 and 60 that do better than 12.5 knots
And all below 1.5 mill as well

Mark,...take all the sarcasm and humor, and scientific jibberish with a (large) grain of salt....boats are simply magic carpets. you need the carpet, but its all about the magic.

the 1.34 is the avg. value for the avg. (heavy) displacement hull.

We have a 64' waterline and a hull speed of close to 12 knots, making this 1.34 value 1.45 for our hull.

Also, Beowulf is 78' long and does 380nm days easy. Explain that :-)

(hint: some hulls plane)

ciao!
Nick.

I think the idea you may be thinking of come from a quote my American author Greg Anderson:

“Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.”

To me its the passage that counts.. all to often the destination proves to be somewhat of an anti-climax....
But I'm weird... I like being 'out there'...

Re: 1.5 Mil. To spend….

Some people have suggested wandering through lots and lots of marinas. That is certainly a good idea. I would also suggest chartering 2-3 boats to try to get an idea what you like and what you want. It really does help to spend time on a boat to get a feel for waking up on the boat, using the head, taking a shower, cooking a meal, putting in a reef, anchoring, setting sails, and getting into the engine. While 2-3 boats may not seem to be enough, it will help you start to pick out traits that you like and do not like.

Re: 1.5 Mil. To spend….

"Cat Man Do"; hull speed (of multi-hull)= 1.74 x (sq rt of LWL) ergo 12.5K = 50'+. Again, please don't confuse speculation with physics it's an nonsensical insult to the discussion. Boats 50'+ in the 15+ knot range are NOT displacement hulls "period"

Step up to the plate and end the nonsense: Buy a boat. Rent a slip. Meet other boaters. Realize sailing is NOT for you. Talk to boaters in your marina. Buy a bigger boat. Rent a bigger slip. Learn a thing or two. Realize power boats are NOT for you. Buy a sailboat with (a) bigger motor(s) add a washer and dryer, internet and satellite TV; everything changes. Now you're a boater who can advise the noobees. ALL is well.
