That is because your graphic is from MASIE as is the daily graph that I posted.

Ice extent is still lower that previous years.

Apparently the Ice Index is better for monthly reports, MASIE is better for daily reports.

I was answering your post that stated the screenshot didn't show any numbers I was making sure you knew where to look on the graphic to see the area numbers.

Re: Time for Northwest - Passage 2018

2 dozen yachts went through last year; one yacht, Northabout, transited both the North Sea Route and the North West Passage in a single season. Current conditions would indicate even less ice this coming year.

You're referring to 2016, yes?

I didn't think any boat got thru the NW Passage in 2017.

According to https://www.spri.cam.ac.uk/resources...estpassage.pdf

34 vessels transited the NW passage in 2017.

That includes the idiot on Ma Louloutte, thanks to whom the authorities are going to impose a lot more restrictions on vessels planning to transit.

The list does not include Northabout. I think that is because she did not enter the Pacific. The voyage started and finished in the Atlantic.

Yes:

These transits proceed to or from the Atlantic Ocean (Labrador Sea) in or out of the eastern approaches to the Canadian Arctic archipelago (Lancaster Sound or Foxe Basin) then the western approaches (McClure Strait or Amundsen Gulf), across the Beaufort Sea and Chukchi Sea of the Arctic Ocean, through the Bering Strait, from or to the Bering Sea of the Pacific Ocean."
...
"Notes: Several vessels, including recent small craft have traversed the Canadian Arctic archipelago, Beaufort Sea and Chukchi Sea to or from Russian waters. Those which neither transited Bering Strait nor entered the Pacific Ocean are not included in this list, although several circumnavigated the Arctic Ocean"
