Very interesting article which details the transition of a wilderness area to one of
commercial explotation of natural resources and its effect on the indigenous communities. Sadly, the
history of the world is a
record of
commercial interest with little concern for the natural
environment. However, perhaps an environmentally safe solution can be reached where they do not destroy a pristine wilderness but are able to reap some benefit for their country and people. We, in the US, have a similar dilemna where our dependency on Middle East
oil makes us politically and economically vulnerable and more US drilling with respect to environmentally sound principles could be a great benefit to our people. Unfortunately, the track
record of Man is poor and we are probably in the initial stages of witnessing the destruction and demise of our wilderness areas. Anyone for Mars?
