Northwest Passage

Without getting political while we are renaming the Gulf of Mexico I have to wonder what's going to happen to the status of the Northwest Passage under the new US president. The US along with China and a few other nations do not recognize Canadian authority over all those artic waters. This seems to be a potentially bigger deal in practical terms including for sailors than what you call the Gulf of Mexico ie:

re: Northwest Passage

After the US sent an ice breaker thru the NW passage without asking, the US agreed to ask first.
Transiting the NW passage requires planning, there only a few good months. And with the right wind, etc., the ice can move rapidly, closing off a channel. No yacht can survive the ice. Large steel king crab boats have been damage by ice just trying to get into Saint Paul harbor.

There's a much better reason to question Russian authority on Northeast passage as it's not all the way inside Russian achipelago (and even then it's possible to go around Novaja Zemlja).
Besides that US Icebreakers are a joke we finns have laugh about..

The status won't change. Its well inside Canadian Territory and as such is a Canadian waterway! No different really than renaming the Gulf of Mexico. Its not America's to rename!

Re: Northwest Passage

A small sailboat is so far removed from all political considerations in the NWP that it simply won't matter, unless there's open hostility and Canadian Coast Guard ships start accosting those entering. It's an exceedingly remote and thinly populated area, and the people who live along the route don't seem to care much for politics.
I do think we'll see a decrease in goodwill toward American cruisers in a lot of places while the [redacted] is in office, and I can only hope that other countries will act mature even while ours returns to infantile ways, and not tar us all with the same brush.
