Northwest Passage - 2016

Both this past winter (2015-2016) and the previous winter (2014-2015) have each set records for having the least maximum annual extent for Arctic Sea Ice on record since satellite surveys of the Arctic Ocean began, about 1980.

A wintertime low does not guarantee a summertime low, but this winter's record low certainly helps increase the odds of a clear passage this summer.

2015 Arctic Sea Ice Maximum Annual Extent Is Lowest On Record

The sea ice cap of the Arctic appeared to reach its annual maximum winter extent on Feb. 25 [2015], according to data from the NASA-supported National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the University of Colorado, Boulder. At 5.61 million square miles (14.54 million square kilometers), this year’s maximum extent was the smallest on the satellite record and also one of the earliest...

This year’s maximum was reached 15 days earlier than the 1981 to 2010 average date of March 12, according to NSIDC. Only in 1996 did it occur earlier, on Feb. 24. However, the sun is just beginning to rise on the Arctic Ocean and a late spurt of ice growth is still possible, though unlikely...

2016 Arctic Sea Ice Wintertime Extent Hits Another Record Low

Arctic sea ice appears to have reached a record low wintertime maximum extent for the second year in a row, according to scientists at the NASA-supported National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and NASA.

Every year, the cap of frozen seawater floating on top of the Arctic Ocean and its neighboring seas melts during the spring and summer and grows back in the fall and winter months, reaching its maximum yearly extent between February and April. On March 24, Arctic sea ice extent peaked at 5.607 million square miles (14.52 million square kilometers), a new record low winter maximum extent in the satellite record that started in 1979. It is slightly smaller than the previous record low maximum extent of 5.612 million square miles (14.54 million square kilometers) that occurred last year. The 13 smallest maximum extents on the satellite record have happened in the last 13 years.

The new record low follows record high temperatures in December, January and February around the globe and in the Arctic. The atmospheric warmth probably contributed to this lowest maximum extent, with air temperatures up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit above average at the edges of the ice pack where sea ice is thin, said Walt Meier, a sea ice scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland...

It is likely that we're going to keep seeing smaller wintertime maximums in the future because in addition to a warmer atmosphere, the ocean has also warmed up. That warmer ocean will not let the ice edge expand as far south as it used to,” Meier said. “Although the maximum reach of the sea ice can vary a lot each year depending on winter weather conditions, we’re seeing a significant downward trend, and that’s ultimately related to the warming atmosphere and oceans.” Since 1979, that trend has led to a loss of 620,000 square miles of winter sea ice cover, an area more than twice the size of Texas...

Arctic sea ice fell to record low for May | The Guardian
Quote:
Arctic sea ice fell to its lowest ever May extent, prompting fears that this year could beat 2012 for the record of worst ever summer sea ice melt.

Data published by the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) this week showed average sea ice extent for last month was more than 500,000 sq km (193,000 sq miles) smaller than May 2012.

The extent of sea ice in the Arctic is one of the key indicators of global warming, and the new findings have been greeted with concern by scientists. Although it is too early to say whether this summer’s ice extent will be the lowest recorded, if current projections follow the course of previous years then it will be at least one of the lowest ever.

Snow cover in the northern hemisphere was the lowest in 50 years in April, the NSIDC said, and Antarctic sea ice was below average for the time of year. [...]

Anyone know how many boats are having a go this year and how they are fairing?

The U.S. Coast Guard Ice Breaker Healy en route to the North Pole during the Arctic Geotraces Summer 2015 Expedition.

An in-depth video of a voyage through the Arctic Ocean ice to the geographic North Pole on the nuclear powered icebreaker '50 Years of Victory'. Leaving the North Pole, we visited Franz Josef Land before sailing back to Murmansk. Along the way we saw polar bears, walruses, seals and birds.

As I suggested in other threads russian nuke icebreakers damaging the already fragile Arctic sea ice . As well as the fragile Arctic ecosystem

As of August 14, Arctic sea ice extent is tracking third lowest in the satellite record. The southern route through the Northwest Passage appears to be largely free of ice. Despite a rather diffuse ice cover in the Chukchi Sea, it is unlikely that Arctic sea ice extent this September will fall below the record minimum set in 2012...

Maybe you need to find a Portuguese captain to do the trip.. they cracked the Northeast Passage easy..

Several sources state that, in 1660-1662, the Portuguese captain David Melgueiro sailed across the Northeast Passage in the ship Pai Eterno (Perpetual Father), travelling from Kagoshima, Japan to Porto, Portugal through the Arctic Ocean. Melgueiro would have taken advantage of the fact that the year 1660 and the immediately preceding years were the warmest in almost two centuries, putting the temperatures of the waters above normal. This was apparently the first complete crossing of the Northeast Passage.[7][8]

So much for Global Warming/Cooling..
