Maine-Nova Scotia-Newfoundland-Greenland-iceland-Norway

Hello,
Im an experienced sailor and sail a well found boat.

Im looking to make this trip in the not too distant future. Probably Depart maine may, and be near iceland by late june/july to avoid storm remants from the caribbean.

Anybody ever done a eastward trip like this? What can be expected as far as provisioning in these places? Anchorages? customs? weather and currents?

After the N Atlantic crossing, the plan is from norway to denmark, amsterdam, london then over to france to try and go part way up the seine. From there, to lisbon and then a traditional crossing over to the caribbean.

Im more interested in the northern part of the voyage, as that will be the first seasons voyage, the boat will be left to winter denmark or somewhere like that.

I can talk to Nova Scotia and Newfoudland.

Look for SVANDANTE on this board, they have done more and are back to Labradore this year.

Judging from your user name you must know if will be pretty cold heading north that early. Most don't do so until mid- to late-June at the earliest. Some years you will encounter too much ice coming down from the Arctic and it will be quite hairy until you get out past the Labrador current. When we went to Labrador we didn't leave Maine until early July and we still saw plenty of ice once we reached northern Newfoundland. Ice varies a lot year to year.

These people have lots of advice based upon years of sailing in Greenland, Iceland and Norway. They've written a cruising guide to Norway.
Attainable Adventure Cruising
ArcticNorwegian Cruising Guide
Passage Planning

There many YouTube videos and of course Google knows a lot.

The global site for cruising sailors — Noonsite has info on the areas, customs, etc.

Re: Maine-Nova Scotia-Newfoundland-Greenland-iceland-Norway

It seems like you will stop off in Iceland, the Faroes, and then to the Shetlands before Norway. I would winter in Lerwick in the Shetlands and avoid starting the Schengen clock until the next spring. We found Lerwick to be great city and an international crossroads for high latitude sailors.

Consider that once you hit Norway the price of a beer is $12 to $15 in a pub. Other expenses (food, coffee) are proportionally just as high.

We found the stretch of water from the Kiel Canal to the UK to be fairly nasty so we skipped Amsterdam.

Another vote for Attainable Adventure Cruising. You could spend several productive hours reviewing what this couple have learned about high-latitude passagemaking.

What a great trip! I would love to visit Greenland and Iceland! We have sailed up the west coast of Norway to Tromso and that is a really fun area. Don't miss Amsterdam and maybe sail the canals of the Netherlands...we loved that too. Northern Europe is another really great area.

An American 34' yacht that left Nfld July 12th 2013 lasted 6 days en route to Iceland before they abandoned ship and were picked up by a freighter.
This year June and July has been a series of gales that sweep over Nfld heading straight to Iceland.
Very rough route.

Re: Maine-Nova Scotia-Newfoundland-Greenland-iceland-Norway

you need a degree of luck , thats the main issue, as bad weather at that latitude can be unsurvivable in a small boat. I have a few friends, who regularly do it to iceland/greenland, ( westward) , tricky at the best of times
