Faroe Islands?

Any experience on the Faroes?

I am collecting scandinavian cruising options for the next few years. Looking at the charts and googlemaps images, the Faroes look like an interesting area for sailing.

Re: Faroe Islands?

I've never been there but am totally infatuated with the islands. Here is a copy to my Youtube play list on them. Good luck with your travels.

Re: Faroe Islands?

Many thanks for the references, reassured me to keep the islands high on my list.

Re: Faroe Islands?

Last summer I made a single handed trip to Faroe from the Netherlands with my 22 ft Marsvin. Great place to visit!

Here's a link to a post of a Dutch singlehander's trip there: Iceland and Faroe Islands - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

Enjoy.

Hi, Sy,
Excellent video and cruise! However, how is it possible for a sailor to sail 1800 miles without radar, refrigeration, Webasto heater, air conditioning, big screen TV, roller furling main, satellite telephone, microwave, diesel stove, diesel engine, diesel generator, space command navigation system . . . whew . . . I'm getting tired . . .on a 22 foot light displacement sailboat? This certainly countermands the advice given by many on this Forum. Was your trip real . . .or was it an exercise in virtual reality. Good luck and safe sailing . . . Rognvald

Nice video, Sy! Agree with Rognvald. That was a real grand venture and interesting choices on the radio 🙂

LOL Rognvald!
Yes, the sattisffaction in my sailing is inversely proportional to all things you mention!
Coming from extreme mountaineering in which I used to live for weeks on end in small ice caves on a 4000m steep wall in very thin air I still think the comfort, luxury and safety on my small boat is gigantic!

Hi, Sy,
It is my opinion that many people, today, have lost the quest for real adventure and delude themselves into believing their floating palace condos and nagging, reluctant mates/wives embody the true essence of their sailing experience. Fortunately, I have neither. Great video. Great adventure. Perhaps there is the blood of an old Viking somewhere in your DNA. They didn't miss many opportunities for companionship during their travels. Good luck and safe sailing . . . Rognvald P.S. You have a great boat!

Particularly venturing out of sight of land on all things a yacht with a fin keel which is bolted on.

Despite being in the middle of an Ocean the Faroes have some astonishing strong tides that rip through the islands. I remember planning a diving trip to the wreck situated towards the northern end of the main channel and thinking that the current is going to give us some headaches with long deco stops. Sadly the costs were far more than we could afford at the time.
