Cold weather goggles

Does any one have any personal experience with the use of goggles when sailing the high latitudes? Do they work and, if so, can you recommend a brand(s) that will do the job?

Re: Cold weather goggles

I would think any good quality ski goggles would work.

Re: Cold weather goggles

I have a clear pair of SeaSpecs for winter days - they're not goggles but they do keep the wind out of your eyes. They were doing 3 sets for $100 so I bought clear, medium, and dark.

Re: Cold weather goggles

I used UVEX, not just goggles but shades and other technical glasses too (e.g. for MTB biking) - recommended.

The limitation of skiing goggles is that they tend to employ fine sponge based filters above and below the visor - the foam tends to trap sea moisture and decomposes pretty soon. Look for a model that possibly does without such foam inserts.

Re: Cold weather goggles

I've had good results from industrial safety eyeware, like

North Safety Norton 180 T1800 Series Safety Glasses

which are basically a UVEX ripoff, similar attributes but usually a lot more affordable.
I agree with barnakiel about the problems with foam, not just the filters, but the face-fitting seal of ski goggles is not durable in marine environments.

Better to rely on thick polyprop balaclava for facial warmth, I reckon (and luxuriant facial hair!)

Re: Cold weather goggles

Any fairly clear ski goggle or dirt bike goggles, especially the ones with pink or amber contrast enhancing tint.

Neoprene bikers face masks also work well to protect the nose. mouth and chin if your foulies don't cut it.

Rarely used but well worth having when called for.

Re: Cold weather goggles

rarely used but the crew seemed to like ski googles ( dunno what brand i have but they do have tinted lenses..) when going to windward into hail or sleet.... I wear glasses and take them off when it is raining or worse for a better view...oh and i also put crew on the wheel at such times... character building...

Cold weather goggles

What we had in the Military, but they do have foam seals, comes with a clear and a dark tint lens, you don't want any tint at night
