Re: Anyone been to Macquarie Island or the NZ subantarctic islands?
we met a very nice lady naturalist that spent 6 months living in a small hut there who did a survey on penguins.
she showed us her slides and gave a short lecture
it is a pretty barren place ,open anchorage, supply ship visited every 3 months or so.
think it is not open to visitors other than scientists and weather people with permission from AUS/ NZ gov.

Salty Dog there is a great book called "The sea and the snow" by Philip Temple. It's about an Australian sailing expedition in the 1960s to Heard Island to climb Mawson Peak. Bill Tilman was the skipper! There are also some great books about the Auckland islands and the shipwrecks that happened there.
My mother has been on some of the NZ sub Antarctic islands due to working with the NZ department of conservation.
Cheers
