new skipper looking to crew to build sailing resume

Hi, all. I'm skipper-certified (ASA 104) but looking for more experience as crew on a cruising sailboat to build my practical knowledge and sailing resume. Life-long sailing has been on smaller boats. Looking for crew opportunities before July 2023.

Also, if anyone has any tips about how to build a skipper sailing resume, please let me know. Thanks.

You might include your location.

I'm located in the US Northeast (close to MA/CT/RI) but have some flexibility to travel farther if needed.

With that specific objective I would recommend joining a race crew.

Step one: get on any boat which races actively. Even if you don't like racing you will learn a lot.

Step Two: Change boats if you need to but try to find a boat which travels to "away" races. Then volunteer to do the deliveries.

Step Three: after you have done some, you can volunteer to take the boat as a delivery captain.

Accomplishing this by July might be a bit ambitious, but you could at least get to stage two. Go to any local yacht club and ask around about who is going to some regional race and volunteer to do the delivery (or the delivery back).

wingssail's advice is right on. Think of the RI to Bermuda Race, for instance; and I bet there are others. Also search for offshore races in your area. Talk to skippers and volunteer for the return deliveries. Racing, you learn about immediate repairs to keep you in the race; deliveries you deal with a wider range of fixes. Plus, you accumulate your nautical miles experience in 24 hr. days, rather than 8.

If you have the money and want to get up the learning curve fast and get hooked into a very valuable long-term resource, I would go on an Ocean sailing leg with either John Kretschmer or 59 North Sailing.

I'm looking for someone to help me move a Beneteau 361 from Annapolis to Atlantic City. Dates for departure are best between dates of April 13 through April 19. With good conditions should take 4 days.

Are you really ready to risk your boat(s) with a newly-qualified skipper who admits he doesn’t have much experience?

I just bought a Endeavour 32 and plan to motor it via inter-coastal from Jaxsonville to Pensacola. Interested?

What is your mast height?

The Okeechobee Waterway is a significant "short cut".

Here is a link to clearances (depth on Route 1 and bridge clearance on lowest bridge). It is updated daily: https://w3.saj.usace.army.mil/h2o/reports/r-oke.html

Re: new skipper looking to crew to build sailing resume

Thanks much! I need to get to the boat, trial the newly installed motor, mount an outboard back-up, and maybe have the yard, pull it, scrape it, and put it back in the water. I just started planning, thanks for the Link. Manual says 43' mast. I was planning cutting across for sure.
Have you done it?
