looking to share a charter to Desolation Sound

We are an older couple, mid 60's who want to charter a sailboat for 2 weeks to explore the BC coast and Desolation sound in September, 2018. We would be leaving from Bellingham where there are many charters available. Share costs which would be approximately $2000.00 for the charter and then provisions etc. Husband is accomplished sailor but with Parkinsons so has slowed down a little. He has been to Desolation before and also sailed extensively around Vancouver. We are very easy going, friendly and eager to explore this beautiful area. We are also both Canadian and could look at chartering out of BC. Anyone out there interested??

charter from courtenay/comox will give you more time in the sound. there are also a few private crewed charters within your budget if you look on craigslist/kijiji

Had you said you were going the first half of October I would have been all over this. Still Sail Canada basic cruising with 10 days out in the salish sea and am looking to pick up asa114 (im taking the course wont get cert'd since im on the SC standard and not ASA) best of luck filling your charter.

1+ on the suggestion to charter from either Comox or Nanaimo. If Desolation Sound is where you want to be either of these would be a far better starting point than Bellingham.

If I have a big argument with my wife, then I'll take a couple of weeks off and I'll join you

Re: looking to share a charter to Desolation Sound

Thanks for the good advice of chartering from Comox but we also wanted to peruse the San Juans and Gulf Islands on the way.

Thanks for the chuckle about fighting with the wife.
We might be able to do October if we don't get any offers for September.

Appreciated all the responses!

San Juans, Gulf Islands and Desolation Sound in two weeks?
You'll be moving every day.
Imho, that's not "perusing", it's a forced march!

Re: looking to share a charter to Desolation Sound

Let’s talk. I am heading north form Anacortes for August- September and could use some company for parts of the trip .

The boat is a newly retrofitted Rawson 30PH. I am a fairly healthy 63 and have been in NW waters since a kid. (ASA thru 1O4 after retiring as a refresher).

That is a wonderful trip Suggest you take at least 3 weeks. We have a 38’ Trimaran out of Bellingham and plan on making that trip early fall too. Let us know when you are going and we might meet up during the trip.

Best charter advise we ever received, and it applies to anywhere, never charter with someone you do not know well. We ignored this once, it was very bad.

Re: looking to share a charter to Desolation Sound

sarthurly, what about asking Captain Puget to take you out on a couple of day sails to see how you get along? He sounds like to be making you a reasonable offer?

Re: looking to share a charter to Desolation Sound

As others have said, two weeks would be a rush if headed north thru the San Juans with a stop or two there and then another while you wait to cross the Strait of Georgia. Chartering out of Comox or Campbell River as been said would make for a nice two week trip. Youve got at least two days to get there and two day's to get back from Anacortes or Bellingham. If you had another party to deliver the boat back, you could swap car keys for boat keys and split the cost that way. Or, for sure hook up with "Captain Puget" I used to watch him on TV. "The Captain Puget show" and "Exploration Northwest" great vintage television.

Re: looking to share a charter to Desolation Sound

I have a 35' Beneteau, Desolation Sound on my bucket list and interested in going this year. I could meet you in Bellingham or Anacortes. US Sailing BBC Certified, cruised San Juans and Gulf Islands multiple times. I should have Captain's license by May. PM me if interested.
