Re: Kauai to San Francisco - mid July

Just an update that I found my 2 crew! Thanks to CF [emoji847] I'm looking forward to a relaxing return with good company after the solo race over.

I'm seeking 2 volunteer crew for ~3-week return delivery from Kauai to San Francisco beginning on or shortly after July 15. I will be racing solo to Hanalei Bay, departing SF June 23 with an expected arrival of July 7 or 8. You would be welcome to arrive before the anticipated departure date to enjoy the area or the post race activities. I will provide onboard provisions as well as pick up/drop off from/to Lihue and San Francisco airports. Each of us would be expected to share watchstanding shifts and some meal prep.

The boat is a 1988 Freedom 38 that is set up for offshore shorthand sailing. She's a dry boat with a full galley, nav station, 2 private berths, a lee berth, and one head. She's equipped with standard safety equipment (EPIRB, life raft, flares, first aid, etc) as well as a Monitor wind vane, solar, SSB with Pactor modem, redundant navigation systems such as computer with OpenCPN, B&G multifunction display, backup GPS, etc., along with radar, AIS receiver, and a Garmin tracker.

As to type of crew, you don't need to be expert, but I would prefer those who have done some offshore passagemaking. Of course, if you're completely green, but more than enthusiastic about gaining experience, let me know and we can discuss further. You'd need to bring your own tethers, foulies and the usual personal gear. I can provide life jackets with harnesses, if needed.

About me: 53-year old woman who's been singlehanded sailing/racing for the past 5 years. I'm also a diver and environmental consultant. The trips over and back will be my first big passages. I've done a number of overnight solo trips with the longest being 400 miles and 3 nights offshore.

Feel free to respond to this post with questions/comments. If you're interested, send a PM here or an email to: office at seajayenv dot com. Please tell me about yourself and your experience. Let me know what further details you would like to know, too.

Mahalo,

Carliane Johnson

Just sent you my
'internet application' and enjoyed doing so. Makes me realize how lucky I am to have had such an adventurous life! And to be able to take a month (or more) off at the drop of a hat. Fair winds to you.
Robert

Re: Kauai to San Francisco - mid July

Hi Robert, my 2 crew and I have already started the bonding process through WhatsApp, a text-based application. One is Canadian and the other from Alaska. I'll leave the details to them as to whether they'd like to divulge more about themselves. So far, I'm already enjoying their comapny! I'll post more, maybe during, but definitely after the trip. I am enjoying the process (my first time looking for crew) and already thinking about the BajaHaha later this year so stay tuned

Your first offshore and you're coming 7k miles from Hawaii?

Babe, hire a captain. Bring as much gas as you can and set your last reefs and get a decent storm sail. Its not like the old days I guess. Hurricanes come up strong and fast in the pacific.

Best of luck and so much love.

Mate, I think that you have rather misjudged this lady (not a "babe") and offered silly advice. Perhaps you should read a few of her posts and rethink yours. Hire a captain for a singlehanded ocean race??? Good grief...

Jim

I don't think you know who you are talking to.
Before commenting it is good to do some research.

Carliane: happy to tell you what every captain might want to know - before spending several weeks at sea with crew!
Remember my mentioning that I wasn't a techie in my 'resume'? And there lies the proof!
I didn't mean to send quite THAT much information to the open CruisersForum (and out across the www!) but hey. I'm pretty sure several readers smiled reading thru it, and although that wasn't my intention it's good to bring a little smile to the world - even at one's own expense! I've no secrets, and life's too short to be dishonest.
I envy you in the best possible way, and do wish you all the best at sea.
Robert.

Since we won't be hearing much from Carliane for a bit, here are two book titles from early BOC races for your enjoyment:

"Against All Odds", by Alan Nebauer
"Chasing Liquid Mountains", by David Adams
